A golden glow appears through the trees ahead and Menelaus finds himself at the edge of a high meadow. Gossamer threads and tiny insects drift lazily through the crisp air catching the sunlight. Snow-capped mountains rise above the trees to touch the azure sky, the air is so clear they appear close enough to touch. On the far side of the clearing he can make out the source of his armours sensorium alert. It is not his brothers as had hoped. A ramshackle ork vehicle idles noisily. It's engine note lacking the rhythm and synchronicity of an imperial machine, it belches smoke from mismatched exhaust stacks as it misfires. A small crowd of greenskins accompany the machine; a pair are bent over the open engine cowling shouting at the driver in the elevated cab. The driver is responding in kind, revving the throttle and eliciting a great bang from the rear of the long flatbed. A larger group is milling around aimlessly, a few take pot shots at the trees with their crude weaponry, or kick out at the smaller subspecies. A blow lands and a diminutive creature is sent flying. A great guttural roar escapes the observers and it take Menelaus a moment to realise it is laughter. He activates his armours offensive suite with a thought and he feels his senses sharpen as the inbuilt narcethium floods his system with stimms. Time slows. Clusters of reticlules are projected onto his helm lenses as his plate identifies and categorises threats. Twenty three targets are listed in order of priority. The first target glows red as the others fade into the background as a dull orange. Menelaus begins to walk. He strides out of the shadow of the trees into the long grass. His deep blue plate drinks the light but the burnished copper of his helm and plastron seem to ignite. He raises his bolt rifle to his shoulder and at once the weapons scope meshes with his optics bringing the distant tableau into sharper focus. Reticules shift as supplementary data alters priorities. The primary remains the same, the crosshairs wavering imperceptibly as his power armour adjusts for the uneven terrain. He breathes slowly, once, twice. At seventy five meters he squeezes the trigger, the distinctive double bark of the bolt round shattering the relative tranquillity of the moment. He adjusts his aim to the next target even as the first is messily decapitated by the mass reactive round. Twenty-two. Whether it is the report of the rifle or his heavy tread he does not know but a great cloud of insects erupts from the grass, bright wings glittering in the air. His vision is flooded as his armour tags, assesses, and dismisses hundreds of contacts. He is blind for a tenth of a second. It is enough. The swarm has dispersed but so have the orks, with a roar they charge. Menelaus fires six more times as the distance closes before swinging the empty rifle up over his shoulder, he changes grip and his arm swings back, sword in hand, he actives the power field and begins to run. Sixteen.

He is barefoot as he walks through the forest, tiny breaks in the canopy sending spears of bright sunlight to draw a shifting constellation on his skin. It catches on the ridges of fresh scars and darts over the sharp lines of a new trident tattoo, the tines cutting through an older, faded ultima. His once pale flesh has already taken on a tan, not the protective reaction of his melanochrome but the natural darkening from days spent under an honest sky. A simian creature eyes him warily from a distant bough before flashing an electric pink neck frill, screeching, and leaping away. Green and yellow avians swoop through the trees calling to one another with hoots and trills. Menelaus stops and kneels, reaching down to the ground. He brushes aside the rotting leaves and detritus to uncover the soil, scooping up a handful and bringing it close to his face. It is so dark it is almost black, he watches a tiny pale arachnid breach the surface then scurry indignantly away. He breathes deeply, the rich biochemical aromas filling his lungs. It is good soil, millennia of tropical forest above a layer of volcanic ash have seen to that. He wonders for a moment what crops might grow in a place such as this. He stands and lets the soil fall though his fingers. He listens, making out distant shouts and laughter and begins to walk once more. In time he reaches the edge of the trees, the forest giving way to a broad expanse of grass that ends abruptly at a bluff, the crash of waves sounds from somewhere far below. Someone shouts his name, and he turns to see the brothers of fourth company, his brothers, he corrects himself, gathered in a loose group. He raises a hand in greeting and Sergeant Darius waves back, a broad smile cracking his youthful face. In ones and twos, the men peel away, racing towards the cliff edge and launching themselves laughing into the air until Menelaus is alone once more. He begins to run. Powerful strides carry him swiftly towards the brink. At the last second, he pushes off hard, his parabola carrying him high into the air. He hangs at the apex of the arc, the cloudless sky filling his vision, pale turquoise at the horizon turning to a rich ultramarine above him. The moment stretches. He closes his eyes as gravity takes him. He twists in the air and angles his body downwards, arms spread wide. Down to join his brothers splashing in the surf. Down to the deep blue sea. End

Salamanders STC communications outpost

the ruined Church (WIP)

A selection of pictures of the ruined Church building I was attempting to finish for the Nerdlings comp this October, I realized probably about last Thursday it was unlikely to make it, but was attempting to carry on in a hopeful try to get it there. It has a core shape for support, then making a haphazard Frostgrave/Mordheim look for brickwork cutting what will be hundreds of little varying polystyrene bricks as I go, with the added advantage that this method fixes any errors on the underframe by covering gaps etc. The roof will be laid with thin Balsa wood, and then tiles created to make it look authentic as possible including loose and dangling ones, still debating on a spire for the tower, wasn't going to with the original entry but now I have more time may do so. As for the entry itself, pretty much got the brickwork to the edge of the roof on the single story part of the building, but still over halfway to do for the tower. It has a main door with planned door on hinges (hopefully) a number of windows most with wooden frames in place, also a frame for roof is there, but held by sellotape at the ridge just to give those looking a better of idea of where I am headed. Will keep updating my progress over on my feed, but even though I didn't make it, this comp has inspired me to get going on the fantasy ruins terrain, I have several buildings planned inc an Inn. Oh and there is a WHFB Chaos Warrior and a 32mm Frostgrave figure in the shots for scale.
