I’ve spent some time over the last few days with the @thearmypainter.bsky.social speed paint pens starter set.

I have thoughts.

Firstly I’ve tried a few of the other paint markers on the market and always found them wanting.

The main reason for this is application.

You’ll never win a golden daemon with these but that’s not what they’re for.

I painted a mini on the sofa with no brushes, no water, and no mess while sitting on the sofa.

It’s tabletop ready (sans base) in really no time at all

Honestly I like these a lot, they’re definitely worth a look

I attempted to recreate my red and blue green scheme with just the pens and I’m not displeased with the result.

The chitin plates have ended up mottled but that’s on me for messing about with uncured paint. I quite like it.

This is a fiddly little mini and some parts were hard to reach

I ended up using a white acrylic fine line pen for corrections which definitely helped.

The paints layer have good coverage and the initial starter set has a good mix of shades that cover the basics.

I grabbed a white primed Tyranid to have a go.

The game changer is the paint itself. Using speed paint makes a big difference. You don’t need to worry about the details as the paint flows into the crevasses as you’d expect.

It is a little tricky to work with the nib, especially around small or tight sections and there are inevitable mistakes

They’re all great for big bold panels largely down to the inherent limitation with the nib type.

The nib is large and saturated so you get a lot of paint but it’s really hard to get fine detail.

The Army Painter pens are the same but have a crucial difference that sets them apart.

The imperium of man is a study in hypocrisy. Compared to society’s of ancient earth it may be considered progressive for attitudes to race, sexuality, and gender are somewhat more enlightened. However this is largely because they have been supplanted by different prejudice.
