A feast of words should be part of every Thanksgiving.

Don't forget to tip your author.

Isn't it strange how often the B-side song is the better song? Sometimes, I think it's because the marketers choose the A-side and the artist chooses the B.

I discovered so my authors I dearly love by randomly thumbing my way along a bookstore or library shelf.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Also, I just read through the magazine. If you like to support spec arts, buying a @trollbreathmag.bsky.social subscription for yourself or a friend as a holiday gift might provide a welcome relief from the cold of upcoming days.
Thanks to all the crew @trollbreathmag.bsky.social for sharing my essay on the origins of the name Hornytown. I'm not sure I even realized as I was creating my DC suburb of Hell all the reasons I chose the name or that was in part a clapback against prejudice.

I'll post the link when it's available

The Tao of Pooh.

I read this during my sophomore year of college and reached a sense of contentedness that lasted for six months.
Have you ever been given a book as a gift that changed you as a person?

Yesterday, i crafted a full Thanksgiving dinner: salad, sweet potato casserole, steamed veggies, roasted lamb, and chocolate cake, but the making of the dinner isn't what pleases me.

It's that the clean-up afterwards took less than a half hour!

To those who celebrate it, whether as a holiday, harvest day, or family day... Happy Thanksgiving.

Remember, Jingle Bells is in actuality a Thanksgiving song.

While grocery shopping today, I walked down the ice cream isle and discovered that Breyers has a flavor called Brownie ala Mode. For some reason, that struck me as funny (or at least a little redundant.)

"I am impressed" originally meant that you were being pressed into military service against your will.

It’s that time of year when everyone goes ‘Omg I gotta tell everyone all the things they can nominate me for’ and then sits around wondering if anyone actually will.

Feel free to nominate my stories for a Hugo, Nebula, Stoker, BSFA, Pulitzer, Nobel… But, equally, I’m thrilled if you just read them.

All good stories come out of puns! Well, maybe not, but a good pun is definitely worth chasing down the rabbit hole.

For me, semantically, it's the difference between "need" and "want."
i swear to fuck if there is one thing i could telepathically beam into everyone's head, it is the disctinction between is/ought. describing reality as it exists does not! imply! endorsement! that it should! be! the way! it exists!

Still looking for some of these! We’ve said yes to a couple of pitches, but are looking for around 3-5 more for early next year.

We are primarily looking for historians of ancient, medieval, and non-Western figures.
Call for (post-PhD) historians and cultural scholars for the pod! We have a specific wishlist of scholarship we’re looking to add to the lineup:
- ancient & medieval history
and/or
- histories of anywhere other than the US and UK, preferably outside Europe

Pitches to: [email protected]
