friends are playing a game called Eco which is minecraft with extra steps (you can establish governments, pass tax laws, vote for leaders - it's meant for servers of 100s of people)

so im going to use the zoning office to regulate their homes out of existence (you can do that)

thank you to @anotherglassbox.bsky.social and @joshmatlow.bsky.social I hope to immediately see a bunch of ice cream shops down the street
I had a dream last night this passed council and the same day a bunch of shops opened in my ward (matlow's)

they were all little ice cream shops for some reason, built into the houses of davisville village, how ominous
The folks at IntegrityTO have finally weighed in on neighbourhood retail with AI generated scenes of creepy faceless loiterers congregating outside a 7-11…

Mind you the recommendation (that didn’t make it past committee) was for *corner lots*. They can’t even prompt right.

These miserable misanthropes moved to a neighbourhood with grandfathered retail and then have the audacity to say it and not they are out of place.

Nice to see the Crosstown during it's RSD but also funny (in a sad way) to watch the poor train sitting at a red light for multiple minutes, including for the advanced left-turn signal of my lane of car traffic

did a berlin walking tour and when we got to the location of hitlers bunker where he offed himself our guide was just like

yeah its a shitty parking lot now and as an urban planner that's probably the most insulting thing it could have been

"if you take all the area where sixplexes currently are as-of-right, it exceeds any other city in Canada."

the population of those 9 wards is barely one million so no, it's not even as large as Calgary, Edmonton, or Ottawa
"I really don't know why they want to pick this fight with us," Councillor Shelley Carroll says of the federal government. "We are bigger than the city of Vancouver by the size of Montreal. So if you take all the area where sixplexes currently are as-of-right, it exceeds any other city in Canada."

city councillors when nobody but septuagenarian homevoters show up: this is the finest tradition of local democracy at work

city councillors when literally anyone else shows up: well that's not REAL public consultation
Councillor Carroll claimed that consultations were just virtual with "a couple of More Neighbours members" phoning in. Grossly false. North York members turned out for the in person consultation and others around the city. Hugely dismissive of the time and effort that our volunteers put in.

I don't know why so many councillors feel the need to call out More Neighbours on the floor of Council for showing up and having opinions that they don't like. I took a vacation day to depute at committee and I wouldn't have bothered if they had been clear that my opinion doesn't matter.

on my last rugby tour our coach was looking for a bar in north amsterdam and found a place called 'sexyland' and thought it sounded cool so we walked there

he didn't realize it was a gay bar until we got in and stood at the bar like this for 5 minutes before leaving 😭💀

a car-guy friend asked me about another car-guy friend's new car and was like 'is it a standard' and i forgot that meant manual for a second and just went 'yeah it looks pretty standard to me' 💀
trying to write about the car tariffs as the least-carpilled man in America is super funny, it's just been an endless slog of me googling "what does it mean for a drive axle to have differential reddit". Spent a solid 15 minutes realizing there are actually US passenger cars that use diesel.

I got whiplash when I saw "By Grimes" in the byline 😭
Before the fires, it often took over a year to get a permit to build housing in LA. Now we need more homes, and fast. What can California learn from streamlining reforms in other states? I'm in @theatlantic.com with @grimes.bsky.social and Nicole Nabulsi Nosek.

I watched back parts of the exec committee meeting and I owe staff an apology. Councillors Carroll, Colle, and Perks (in an absolutely wild rant) opposed a commercial parking levy. The passivity is coming from the executive committee members.
Executive Committee agenda today that puts the city's passivity on display
-Staff recommend no commercial parking level
-Staff recommend costly homeowner handouts for stormwater management but no taxes
-Stasis on new LRTs because we lost the ability to build them
