I have won the election of Councillor-at-Large at the University of Alberta Graduate Student Association

I represent ALL graduate students at council now, not just my own department.

I will do everything in my power to get the university child care funding back

Sat through yet another presentation by University of Alberta admin tonight on their commitment to "community, access and belonging"

I don't understand how we all continue to entertain this with a straight face after they cut 100% of the university-community child care funding

Of course family doctors are excluded from this plan, because on some level the government also knows it's wrong and will lead to more inequity

But, like many other decisions the UCP makes, they decided they may as well see what they can get away with.

The crux of Alberta's surgical facility scandal is that organizations were taking public money for private gain

Now, allowing physicians and partners to openly accept private money is a way of shielding everyone from this criticism

Hey, it's all above board now. Leave us alone

Today at the University of Alberta GSA tuition town hall I told the university administration directly that if they are going to increase tuition by 75% in nursing (and 50% in education) under the guise of "maintaining student services"

then we want the university child care funding back.

My latest investigation for @thetyee.ca details what the UCP government doesn't want the public to know about their private surgery push.

The shift strong-arms doctors but hasn’t saved money or shortened waits for critical operations, sources say. A Tyee investigation.

And I will win.

Three months ago we wrote a piece on the rise of return-to-office mandates and the inevitable increase of viral illness in Canada

Now, there is a swell of coverage warning about the catastrophic flu season coming, especially for kids

Yet no one is getting their flu shot- why?

Canada has lost its measles elimination status today. Undoubtedly, part of this is because of misinformation.

But it does not explain the whole story here, and simply attributing this public heath failure to misinformation absolves those in power of their contributing role.

Today, The New York Times has published a story eviscerating Danielle Smith and her provincial government's response to the measles crisis in Alberta.

Interestingly, Deena Hinshaw is interviewed for what appears to be the first time since she was fired.

There is no evidence to support that federal research funding is being unfairly allocated to "woke" or "leftist" research.

If anything, as @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I found, research on structural inequality is underfunded.

I will link our original piece below.

Keeping up with the UCP government's democratic transgressions can be difficult.

But not impossible.

🧵The House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research passed a motion requiring the Tri-Council to release confidential data.

Some members claim research funding is being unfairly allocated to "DEI" or "woke" research

But last year @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I debunked this.

An update for folks on this,

I spent the morning sending this data to the Standing Committee on Science and Research.

Regardless of if you feel the data should or should not be released, it is vitally important these debates are rooted in facts and not myths.
🧵The Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research has put forward a motion to release ALL data in relation to federal research funding applications.

This motion was put forward by conservative MPs who are skeptical of funding being allocated "fairly."

FYI, this will end up outing by name, many transgender folk who are not Out, and many LGBTQ folk who are not out.

And many other people who have lived experience with mental illness and other disabilities who are not “out” all given to some unknown unnamed non-employee, non MP. #cdnpoli

Pretty clear the UCP strategy here is to keep nurses from going back to school by pricing them out of it. This ensures they don’t leave the workforce.

In reality, this will make the nursing educator shortage worse as well as patient outcomes.
It is yet again that time of year!

Exceptional tuition increase proposals at the University of Alberta have started to drop.

A potential 80% TUITION INCREASE in nursing for 2026.

Cheers to the UCP for making education accessible and affordable.
