The adage “those who can do, those who can’t teach” is not universally applicable. But w/the mediocrity of my own career, it applies to me. Fortunately teaching brings its own satisfactions, just hoping my students have a fraction of the fun that I have.

Getting a teaching gig is what got me through the pandemic, the onset of middle-age, and leaving the formal world of work. In learning to teach, I also started to grow up or at least into myself.

Did you know that ICE does incredibly interesting and important law enforcement work—separate from the immigration enforcement work? Distracting them from these missions may be making us less safe!

If you care about things like stopping CSAM, human trafficking, smuggling, etc. you should be very very pissed that HSI is being used for deportations and if you see anyone with HSI on their gear, you should definitely ask them who’s investigating these things while they’re out in the street
The loudest calls to abolish ICE are coming from inside the agency. Having worked at DHS for almost a decade, thought I’d share some background on ICE, its various missions—and some lesser known implications of the administration’s policies.

Maybe you saw that ICE is going to the Winter Olympics? It’s not a big deal actually—but there are unfortunate deeper implications. And what’s this pic? Well read on and learn about Homeland Security Investigations. It’s cool stuff!

VP Vance has been busy and we’ve got TAKES! He’ll be a dad again, he’s breaking ties in the Senate, he’s yelling at Denmark. Some of what he’s been up to is pretty good. Some is kind of bad. And some is just plain ugly!

one kind of weird aspect of this is that a relatively diverse federal agency has been sent to a very white city by white nationalists to do ethnic cleansing, where they're executing white people in the street

For this snowy Monday, settle back with a nice long read about all the doings of our VP. There’s some good stuff—he’s going to be a dad again. But he’s also on point for a lot of unpopular policies, which isn’t so great.

I spent the last year writing a book about the ridiculous demands of what it means to be masculine. But a guy who takes care of people who served our country, asks a woman “are you ok?” When she is in distress and looks out for his vulnerable neighbors seems like a pretty good role model for a man.

Just had an article in Foreign Policy about when VPs take over during national calamities. They usually don’t do particularly well. This post outlines the article, but adds some additional analysis.

I just had a fun article about when VPs take charge in Foreign Policy. As the headline says, it usually doesn’t go great. The understudies aren’t up for the main stage. But there have been surprises. Can Venezuela’s new President buck the trend?

Used to go to church with a Japanese American WW2 vet. He was so proud of his service in Italy during the war. When he got home, he married a woman who was white, and faced persecution for it. He knew ALL about the good and the bad of this country and wouldn't have changed one thing he did.
i like how this person thinks this is an own instead of the fact that Japanese-Americans believed in America more than the fucking idiots that interned them

The world learned today that you absolutely have to bully this dumb old asshole as a collective. Better late than never for them, but we better get used to being aggressively humiliated for the next few years.
