The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021 was intended to restore voting protections after Shelby v. Holder gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Immediately, states began making it harder to vote with voter ID laws, fewer polling places in cities, and illegally gerrymandered maps.
