I received the most wonderful gift from my husband today, a first edition copy from 1939 of “The World was my Garden” by Dr. David Fairchild, who is a great botany hero. The copy was originally owned by Victoria Burbidge botanist at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens & at Kew, & Denver Botanic Garden.
I passed my PhD progress review yesterday! I got some valuable feedback that I am keen to take on and continue doing exciting work with my supervisors! @york.ac.uk

Psst early birds. Yes you, put down your toast, we have a mind blowing fact for you! 🤯

The oak trees used in the construction of the Undercroft were felled in 1358. The trees were likely to be 200 to 250 years old. Making them saplings within 50 years of the Norman Conquest!

So excited to head to Washington State University Honors College next week to talk about #medieval #Armenia, & specifically the lives of medieval folks who built a beautiful world in art even while surrounded by political chaos, & left traces of themselves for an uncertain future to remember

The guy whose daddy bought his way into Wharton, the guy whose grades were so shitty he's never disclosed them – that guy just destroyed the Department of Education. This is what dystopia looks like. This is what Fascism looks like.

In the 1790s a London woman named Eliza Denyer developed a modest reputation as a restorer of medieval manuscripts. She was forgotten by scholars and, in one case, her restorations were deliberately replaced by a man’s. I recovered her story & tracked all her known work here: tinyurl.com/2ktztx2e

In my book Between Two Rivers, I dedicate a chapter to the origin of rule by a single person and ideas about the quintessential king in ancient Mesopotamia.

I also explore queens, including the very enigmatic Ku-Bau, a tavern-keeper turned queen in the ancient city of Kish.
