A 🧵:
Fabulous figs, frightening foie gras, flattering liars! An ancient food thread that has it all; (If you're sensitive to animal cruelty, then be forewarned!)
In the name of Hades, what do you mean Thomas? What connects these seemingly very different things -namely figs and liver- together?
1/x
A classic Greek scene with a fig tree on the right of the image shading two chairs and a small round yellow table in a warm sunny summer day. An image from an ancient Roman mosaic, of a kid ushering two geese, one white on dark

I know it isn't the important point and I know it's tedious to repeat this but really - the Welsh language has equal status in Wales and government press offices should regularly get this right.

I loved that album and I could never pinpoint exactly what was it that made me love it! I never read an interview with Burial before! Thisnwill be interesting! Are they still making music?

Last week I published the full transcript from Burial's last ever interview on my Substack. The conversation took place the month before Untrue came out in October 2007, in my living room in Tooting. Suffice it to say people have gone a bit nuts over it 💗 danhancox.substack.com/p/burials-la...

The Inbetweeners is making a comeback, which is confusing, because I'm sure we were told by tedious culture warriors that this was against the laws of physics

Anyway I don't do the place nor the food justice here in a few posts, you have to listen to the expert Irina Janakievska talking with passion and clarity about the Balkans, on this part one of our conversation:

Could you imagine if Council Tax was abolished and replaced with something reasonable??!!??
I was thinking about how bizarre and unfair and old the system is since 2006 when i had to pay a lot as not student any more, and i was working but money wasn't enough!

This tweet has been doing the rounds on Twitter now that Nathan Gill has pleaded guilty.

If only someone had tried to investigate UKIP & Russian interference 🧐

There’s another timeline where the Guardian supported me, doubled down on the investigation & I look 5 years younger ..

I bang on about this a lot: I think the combination of a global pandemic, underregulated internet/SM, collapse/corruption of trustworthy media, plus now unregulated genAI, is a wildly toxic environment for radicalisation & mental health. We see the results of that in our politics & lives every day

Everyone knows at least one person (normally, but not exclusively, a guy) whose gone properly mental due to net rabbit holes.

We see public figures regularly go mad and destroy themselves.

And we have, at a policy level, just decided to put our fingers in our ears and go nahnahnah

Last night I heard of another friend of a friend who has been lost to a rabbit hole of online propaganda. We need to start treating this as a serious public health concern.

They always start with free speech. It sounds reasonable, doesn’t it? Free speech? And they can use it to shut down anyone who criticises them, because it’s all “free speech”

After “free speech” it’s “protecting women and girls”

And then it’s whatever they actually wanted.

The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"
