The sample is dominated by large olivine and clinopyroxene crystals which are exhibiting bright second order interference colours. They are set in a much finer groundmass which contains abundant plagioclase crystals, recognisable through their first order grey interference colours and long, thin crystal shapes. Large vesicles are scattered through the sample, appearing rounded and black.

While I'm advocating for plane-polarised light, here is some nice hauyne (blue), alongside leucite (colourless, varying size), and a small amount of clinopyroxene (greens/browns).

Note how there are several generations of serpentine, among them a clear one that filled the first fractures, and a dark one (full of magnetite) that replaced the rest of the olivine.

Just one of the best thin section images you're likely to see. Brightly coloured fresh olivines in blues, yellows, and oranges among smaller black, white and grey plagioclases, which generally define a fabric from left to right.

Tried a diff. approach w/ PPT slides this year. Rather than slide numbers, the slides transition from morning through to evening to indicate progression, with diff. animals throughout.

Gives the chance to sneak one easter egg into each lecture too.

A local #ThinSectionThursday today. Clinopyroxene- and olivine-phyric basalt from Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. Location given as St Anthony's Chapel, so probably lava two or three of the Arthur's Seat lava succession.
A photomicrograph of a basalt between crossed polars. It is full of large colourful clinopyroxenes, some round grey vesicles, and some yellowy grey altered olivines. The groundmass is full of little plagioclase feldspars and iron oxides.
