anyone happen to know if the coat of arms shown for Ölse here correspond to a contemporary city? (probably Polish given the ones around it are all German names for contemporary Polish cities). there are a few towns with similar names but none have similar (or any) coats of arms.

been reading about the Franconian War/punitive expedition, and i have to say, it is very cool to see some old woodcut like this one of the burning of the Waldsteinburg and be able to drop into google maps and look at the ruins yourself.

this is mainly what attracts me to this period (beyond the pleasing renaissance-era aesthetics). it was this omnipresent, omnidirectional class war. hyper sharpened contradictions. i've never seen a starker or more beautiful rendering of the struggle between the bourgeoisie and the knighthood.

favorite bits. curious who the two captains depicted are, though i suspect the one on the left is Kasimir of Brandenburg, and the one on the right is Ullman Stromer, but i'm not sure. curious if any German speakers know more about it.

gigantic list of all the robberies (or "detainments"/"aufhalten" as they were sometimes called) committed by nobles against citizens and residents of Nuremburg. including 8 knights stealing a few coins from a servant girl, heists of 2400 lbs. of copper, barrels of pepper, wine, fur, knives, iron.

been reading through "There I, Paul Dolnstein, Saw Action" again as research for something, and it's always funny to remember how even as late as the XVI century people didn't spell their very own names consistently.
