Today I learned that the head strap on this pack sack (backpack) is called a tumpline or mecapal, and helps use the spine/back with carrying the load.
Found in a reprint of Camp and Trail Methods by Elmer Harry Kreps. It came home with me.

Not great, but not bad. Tastes like the ghost of Nestlé Strawberry Quik from the cuboid can that had a round metal porthole cap on top you’d try to pry open with a spoon’s edge.
