Today I learned that the head strap on this pack sack (backpack) is called a tumpline or mecapal, and helps use the spine/back with carrying the load.
Found in a reprint of Camp and Trail Methods by Elmer Harry Kreps. It came home with me.

Not great, but not bad. Tastes like the ghost of Nestlé Strawberry Quik from the cuboid can that had a round metal porthole cap on top you’d try to pry open with a spoon’s edge.

But at least three kittens. Likely four. Maybe more were down below. And mom. I took the opportunity to set up my trail camera I had inside the house (for downloading and fresh batteries - bad timing), cleared snow and leaves off a part of the deck, refilled the heated water dish…

Then another head popped out and the rest of the kitten followed suit and tore off the other way to the chokecherry tree and disappeared under the deck. The first kitten I saw inside the shelter may have been the earlier fluffy one but I don’t think so. It all happened so fast.

Then chaos. I think the fluffy one followed suit. I stepped toward the shelter and saw another one inside who popped out crazy fast, turned and ran between the shelter and house, then under the deck.

Ope. There was mom (young!), who zipped under the deck. Then a light colored kitten popped out wondering where mom went, then saw me and followed mom.

Once home after work, I peeked out my back door and to the side, the fluffy kitty was playing with my shovel before it hopped on top of the shelter. Being optimistic, I grabbed a carrier and positioned it within reach and slowly opened the door and went outside. #cats #northdakota

6:30am - When I checked the outside food bowl, I saw a fluffy kitten taking several steps in the snow, then slowing down and freezing when it saw me. It then scooted off to the side, where its mother was. Was pleased to see signs my cat shelter was being used. Lotsa footprints for just two tho.
