If my memory serves me correctly, Nassim Nicholas Taleb was one of those who justified it.
One of my earliest moments of radicalization was in 2005 when Larry Summers said that women biologically have less aptitude for science than men. I know I shared this story many times in many ways and places, but once, when I was a young grad student, at a conference where there were about 100 men and only a handful of women...

Recursion is a mental illness. You want to do WHAT to my call stack?? How do people think it's natural to put a thing inside itself? Literally makes me sick just thinking about it

In the past, I thought like them.

We can't do anything. LLMs are here to stay.
But thanks to several people (Gisele Secco, @emilymbender.bsky.social @alexhanna.bsky.social, @olivia.science @irisvanrooij.bsky.social @hagenblix.bsky.social) I changed my mind.

LLMs are being used to generate fake references (hallucinated references).

This one happened to Lidiany Cerqueira in a published material, but I have seen many others in non published material.

It's 2025 and still there are people who apparently feel comfortable making top-10 lists of "greatest male x" but forgetting to specify "male". (In this case, x was "AI linguists" which I think meant "linguists whose work you might care about if you're trying to build 'AI'".)

Cal meets Ed
It was really nice of Cal Newport to give me this shoutout about the AI bubble and how long I've been at this, and I appreciate anyone who has kept reading my work this long too.

training data is literally the most important ‘ingredient’ that can reveal so much about model behaviour

but again, opening up your training data is like putting your dirty laundry out and can bring an entire company down

The consequences of the recent GEMA vs. OpenAI decision will be very interesting for "coding agents" and the sources they vomit out. Cause a lot of the code their developers accumulated is GPL-licensed.

Not sure if Karp was already like this. More likely, working on a war machine funded with Thiel whispering sweet anti-Christ nothings has wrecked this man's brain.
