Easy for this to get lost amidst all the horrors, but it was a *long* time coming. The first UAW election at this plant was during the Obama administration. (And the UAW's history of trying to organize southern auto workers goes back many more decades.)

January saw the most layoffs to start the year since 2009. Hiring was also at the lowest level to start the year since 2009.
Layoffs in January were the highest to start a year since 2009, Challenger says
With the recent narrative centering on a no-hire, no-fire labor market, the data suggests that the layoff part of the equation could be stepping up.

I’m on the scene at Franklin and 1st. A convoy of about a couple dozen ICE/HSI agents broke the entryway into an apartment building at 6am. No warrant presented. Less than 24 hours ago, Tom Homan announced the end of large convoys in Minnesota… Bullshit.

The Washington Post is not The Washington Post without great Metro coverage of one of the most important regions in the world.

And the Sports Capital demands robust sports coverage.

The impacted journalists have been a powerful engine of storytelling in our city. This is a big loss.

ICE used teargas on us because they could.

We need the Detention Policy Impact Fee, which penalizes landlords who allow this behavior, enforced!

When you’re asked to explain lawless actions.

Every cabinet Secy is just making it up as they go along w/the sole goal of doing Trump’s will, leaving the next cabinet member to stumble around trying to make lawlessness make sense.
If you want to FINALLY watch Scott Bessent get pinned down on specifics about the illegal money laundering operation being conducted by the Trump admin from someone who knows WTF he’s talking about, this clip is your chance. Bessent gets destroyed.

The DOJ lawyer who said "this job sucks" was born in Vietnam and when asked by a judge about ICE's racial profiling said:

“I am not white, as you can see. And my family’s at risk as any other people that might get picked up too, so I share the same concern, and I took that concern to heart."
NEW: A rupture between DOJ and ICE has emerged in Minnesota, where overwhelmed prosecutors keep dropping the ball — and saying ICE won't return their messages.

The crisis has had real-world consequences for migrants illegally detained

one of my strongest beliefs is that we're in our situation right now bc some of the most prominent talking heads (e.g. joe rogan, andrew schulz) are learning about politics in their 40s and 50s, instead of their teens and early 20s, and we have to go along for the ride as they learn basic things

Elon Musk and others LOSE their bid to duck depositions in DOGE litigation.

Judge doubts protections for "high-ranking government officials" for multiple reasons. It's unclear they ever had that status, and Musk "left government service."

NEW: Abigail Spanberger this afternoon ordered that all state agencies leave ICE's 287(g) program.

This means that the state police (and some other agencies) will no longer be empowered to detain and arrest people for ICE.

Big, big move by the governor within weeks of coming into office.

The Rupert Murdoch guy who Bezos put in charge of the Post just fired the entire sports and local desks and much of the international desk.

His explanation?

“Even as we produce much excellent work, we too often write from one perspective, for one slice of the audience."

My takeaway is that Grokipedia may be useful for nonpoliticized topics — its material on my bio is more detailed than Wikipedia — but is factually unreliable when its mandate to say some conservative stuff kicks in. It strains to invent fake things if there's nothing real to say.
Checked my entry on Grokipedia (Elon's AI-written antiwoke Wikipedia). Bio accurate, but the LLM's conservative viewpoint mandate led it to invent fake articles & twist 2 incidents where I corrected right-wing outlets into stories where they instead criticized me. charliesavage.com/2026/01/grok...

Think about it like this. This ICE agent was on camera and unmasked — fulfilling one of three "demands" Democratic leader Chuck Schumer just issued in order to agree to save Republicans and give DHS even more money.

And he was still threatening to kill someone.
"You raise your voice, I erase your voice."

ICE in Minneapolis are erasing your rights.
