Zyklon B was a pesticide based on hydrogen cyanide (HCN), initially developed and marketed by the German company Degesch in the 1920s for disinfection and pest control (elimination of lice, rats, etc.) in buildings, ships, and warehouses. At Auschwitz (more precisely, Auschwitz-Birkenau), Zyklon B was diverted from its original purpose to become the primary agent used in the gas chambers for the mass murder of Jews, Roma, Soviet prisoners, and other victims as part of the "Final Solution" ordered by the Nazi regime. Specific context of its use in Auschwitz: From September 1941, trials of murder by gassing with Zyklon B were carried out (first on Soviet prisoners and sick people in Block 11 of Auschwitz I, then on a larger scale). From 1942, with the commissioning of the large gas chambers of crematoria II, III, IV and V in Birkenau, Zyklon B became the main means of industrial extermination: the Zyklon B pellets were introduced through openings in the roof or walls; upon contact with the air, they released the deadly gas that killed within minutes. Approximately 1.1 million people were murdered in Auschwitz, the vast majority (more than 900,000) by gassing with Zyklon B. German documents from the time (invoices from the Tesch & Stabenow company which supplied Zyklon B to the camps, testimonies of the Sonderkommandos, reports by Rudolf Höss – commandant of Auschwitz –, later chemical analyses of the ruins of the crematoria) confirm this massive use for homicidal purposes. In summary: although Zyklon B was a legitimate commercial disinfectant product before the war, its primary use in Auschwitz was the systematic extermination of hundreds of thousands of people in the gas chambers.
