If a foreign adversary snuck into our Federal budget and cut science research and education the way we’re cutting it ourselves — strategically undermining America’s long-term health, wealth, and security — we would likely consider it an act of war.

It's official. After a few minor tweaks, Sandman Slim 13 is off to the publisher. It will be weeks before I know how they like it but, overall, I'm happy with the book. I hope readers enjoy it when it comes out next year(?). I'm really looking forward to your responses.

My heart goes out to all of the good folks within NIH who are dealing with shit more directly.

I am so sorry that you, your colleagues, and the institution that you love are being treated with such disrespect.

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

The decision a lot of universities face now is whether to:

-- have their federal funding pulled because they stood on principle to protect their students and the integrity of their research, or

-- have their funding pulled anyway just because they exist, regardless of how cravenly they submit.

March 23, 2010: President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. Vice President Biden said, “It’s a big fucking deal,” and he wasn’t wrong.

None of this would’ve happened without the badass leadership of Pelosi, Reid, and grassroots Dems.

I miss these folks…
