Really pleased to see my student Xue Qin publish a sole-authored article in 近代史研究 on educational officials in the central government in the late Qing, using the CGED-Q JSL!

We have a new working paper introducing the Tongguanlu 同官禄 as a source for studying positions, qualifications and kin of local officials in the late Qing. This is one of the few sources that provide information on the kin of holders of less prestigious degrees like 监生,生员,异途贡生。 osf.io/preprints/so...

Like how is it that someone like David Brooks, who hasn't had anything useful to say for decades, still has a column? Thomas Friedman? I could go on. I genuinely don't understand.

I have always wondered how it is that pundits seem to have some kind of equivalent of tenure, without anything like a formal review. It seems like once you are anointed as a Serious Person, you can have a column, lectures, appearances, etc. forever, even if you have nothing new to say.

Bluesky needs more discussion of paving tiles and I'm doing my best to fill the gap.

Yeah. Fortunately, Wuhan Station fortunately has a pretty complete canopy so never had an issue there. My uni (HKUST) did have some places outdoors where there were tiles with smooth finish and they were dangerous to walk on when wet. A few years ago they were replaced with textured tiles.

New photos from Wuhan High-speed Rail Station. The tiling on the platforms has a reflective finish which makes for interestng light. Every time I depart from Wuhan I take photos at the station and over the years I have built up a collection: camerondcampbell.smugmug.com/China/Mainla...

The trams are awesome.
Tourists now account for about 15% of the 150,000 tram trips made in the city each day, reckons Nixon Cheung from Hong Kong’s tram network. The phenomenon relates to a broader trend

George R.R. Martin has said that if he never completes Game of Thrones sequel Winds of Winter (or the book after that), there's no plan for anyone else to step in. Instead, his Song of Ice and Fire series simply "won't be finished."

I just started processing pictures from a visit to Seoul back in December. Here are some pictures from a walk on Supyo-ro near Jongno 3-ga on our first evening. Full gallery: camerondcampbell.smugmug.com/East-and-Sou...

Needs to wander into a small town that he finds out is entirely populated by them.

Alexander Abian told us what to do with the Moon, but we ignored him, and now we're paying the price.

This is what Bluesky is for

Remember he started at the tail end of an era when artists still named themselves after administrative or geographic units... Kansas, Chicago, Alabama, Asia, and his case, Manitoba. Till he got sued by Handsome Dick Manitoba.

Great to see some truly awful people turning on each other.

Yeah. Sort of bizarre in retrospect. But given how time and money intensive parenting is now, no wonder people want few or no kids...

Yeah, I can't help but think that birth rates would be higher if parenting was as casual as what I remember from being a kid in the 70s and early 80s. Most of the time our parents had no idea what my friends and I were doing.
An underrated factor in "why don't people in wealthy societies have more kids" is changing societal norms that now expect even older kids to be chaperoned by an adult any time they are in public, and to be chauffeured by a parent as their only means of transportation
Older generations spent a lot less time parenting. Millennial dads spend nearly as much time parenting as Boomer moms did. Millennial and Gen X moms way more.

Yeah, it passed its sell-by date when they gave it to Kissinger. It's an embarrassment and they should just quit.

When Hukou becomes less important, what's next? New work with one of my students from Shanghai! It is fun to see how daily observations inspire the student and the research!
