I go here and there. Sometimes I take pictures while I’m there.
Some splashes of colour on a drizzly afternoon in Paris.

Here’s a quote from the brilliantly witty play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” (a retelling of Hamlet told from the perspective of two minor characters having an existential dilemma).

RIP to Sir Tom Stoppard.

The new crew hotel in Paris is decent. The rooms are well appointed and the location is reasonably convenient.

I think it’s also the only hotel I’ve stayed in where the room number bears absolutely no relationship to the floor you’re on.

Luckily you just tap your card in the elevator.

We lost sight of the ground a couple minutes after takeoff in Paris and didn’t see it again until 5 minutes before landing in Toronto, around 8 hours later.

Despite taking French for 10 years as a child I barely speak enough to order off a menu. My accent is Anglo-Canadian with occasional Quebecois pronunciation.

My heart goes out to the poor Parisian lady in the chocolate shop who kindly tolerated my broken, execrable French.

Got my chocolates though

Paris was calling the ceiling 300’, but I didn’t have the approach lights until minimums and no sight of the runway until around 150’.

Cat I only, just to keep it spicy.

Since I’m Canadian there is absolutely no reason why my Lego avatar should have a pilgrim hat, yet here we are.

An interesting/odd bit of Canadian trivia (well known in Canada, maybe not so much elsewhere); we have a reputation for tolerance, politeness, hospitality, and producing terrifying, hyper-aggressive soldiers in times of war.

I have some issues with Carney. I don’t appreciate that he expresses concern for Canadian workers while undermining collective bargaining.

At the same time I DO appreciate that we have a calm, intelligent Prime Minister who speaks in complete sentences instead of slogans.
Carney: We know that this decades-long process of our ever-closer economic relationship between Canada and the US has ended. And as a consequence of that, many of our strengths have become our vulnerabilities, particularly in those industries that are most tightly integrated with the US….

I like flying with junior pilots. It’s why I’m in the training dept. We hire great people; I enjoying working with them.

My last two days in the sim were with a senior FO though, only around 1000 numbers junior to me (with more time than me on the 330).

My workload was noticeably reduced

A few weeks ago my colleagues at WestJet had a gear collapse while landing in St Maarten.

It was reported as a “hard landing” and the pilots were blamed in the media.

Much less media coverage with the initial TSB report.

Not a hard landing.

Not the pilots’ fault.

It’s been a week for training.

Annual Recurrent Training in the classroom on Monday.

Recurrent sim on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Away on a 3 day trip starting tomorrow… where I’ll be the one conducting the training for a new Cruise Relief Pilot.

Two days in the sim completed.

One day of maneuvers - just one emergency after another. One day of more real-time scenarios, “flying” gate to gate.

All signed off for another few months.

Off to Paris tomorrow.

In this nondescript building, near the airport admin facilities, the Flight Attendants do a lot of their practical training. Aircraft doors. First Aid. Fire extinguishers. They have full “cabin simulators” to put them through the paces.

Pilots also stop by once a year for ground training.

An #avgeek 🧵

If you fly people around for a living then one of the most common emergencies you deal with is passengers in medical distress.

When someone is having a serious issue it becomes a team effort for the crew and our support staff on the ground.

An orca expert on Insta just clued me in to a horrifying thought;

All of the whales (dolphins etc) who aren’t lucky enough to die suddenly will die of drowning.

When they get too old and sick to keep on going… dying of old age… they’ll be too weak to swim to take that last breath - they all drown.
