25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

Also amplifying:

Kenneth Arrow's 1963 paper "Uncertainty and the Welfare Economics of Medical Care" is, I believe, the most cited paper in economics history, and it can fairly be summarized as "It is impossible for patients to be informed consumers."
Except, patients have _never_ been consumers. That's not how any of this works. Have you ever tried to get a hospital to tell you what a procedure will cost? Or your insurance company? Or your doctor? None of them know. /1
Roger Marshall: "We want patients to become consumers again. We want patients to see what the actual prices are. We believe that if we would add the price tags to this bill, that it would save the country a trillion dollars a year."

I can't remember who described American health care as:

A provider charges for a service
The insurance co. (may) force them to discount it
The insurance co. (may) pay part of that
The patient is billed the balance

... and literally no one can tell beforehand what *any* of those costs will be.

I agree in concept but will also quibble. For that type of person, accumulating vast fortunes is also a game, and it's unsurprising those who are good at that game would want to keep challenging themselves to "win" more.

The problem is, as Brandon says, fortunes are toxic. For *everyone*.
If you make a billion dollars — or $500 million or even $100 million dollars — and you keep trying to make more, then there is something seriously wrong with you. It's a mental illness akin to hoarding or drug addiction.
