I could get behind that line - lots of play for a couple of pawns! After Bd7 Qc4 compy says cxd4 Bxb7 Be6 Qb5 Nd7 is still equal - not sure I could quite get there analysing over the board…

Was pleased to find Nxe5 instead of the obvious Bxd1 - although taking the rook is fine I think Nxe5 made my life so much easier.

Thanks a lot! Yes that was where I got to in my (admittedly fairly brief) thinking - I didn’t particularly *want* to play Nd7-b6 but wasn’t quite able to convince myself that Bd7 was working. Given the position again l’d go for Bd7.

But isn’t that the beauty of it - if your repertoire is fundamentally sound then you can play it at any level because you always just need to know a little bit more! (Specific preparation is a bit different - don’t want to be an easy target - but that doesn’t happen much at our level)

In case it helps (and appreciate you’ve got a great answer from Peter) I’ve played the Grunfeld at the 2000-ish level for a while and I really enjoy it, even though sometimes it doesn’t make much sense!

I’m not really a coder but my Excel skills are pretty good - put together my Grandmaster Birthday spreadsheet as well as something to visualise the sizes of countries as concentric squares based on a suggestion on Twitter.

It is, though 1…Nxe5 2.dxe5 Qxd3 3.Rxd3 Bc2 4.Rdb3 isn’t great - but after 2.dxe5 the rook on d1 is completely free because the Black queen controls the square, so 2…Bxd1 just wins material.

Though the BBC has it wrong. Although dinosaurs are skellingtons nowadays they wouldn’t have been at the time of making the footprints (another clue comes from the word footprints if you’re still flummoxed)
