. @sararribas.bsky.social's String Data Art exhibit represents ~2 years of work, starting w/physical archival research; noticing patterns of social artistic relationships around a major Flamenco event in Spain in 1922. Towards public humanities, how to make sense of large amount of people+info? +

We also installed a new poster in @scholarslab.bsky.social (by @lmmiller.bsky.social & me) explaining the data + #DHmakes art that's been growing in our space & encouraging folks inspired by these to come chat w/us about how they might explore or share their own interests using digital+craft methods
Poster that says in large font "cultural data tells a story—", followed by smaller text: "*Our* stories. Each of the installations in Scholars' Lab's public space provide novel, sometimes beautiful, ways of seeing humanities data: weaving what we know of the past, present, or imagined futures-from the data in cultural evidence like manuscripts, maps, oral histories, photo albums, & archives-into visible scholarship telling stories, revealing patterns, guiding you to new research questions.
Each of these projects is more than its final product. They represent a creator's lengthy research & learning process: of discovery (what can you learn from making research art?), communication (passing on what they discover to others), & inspiration (modeling more ways we can recover & share our stories).
In the Scholars' Lab, we value this process over perfection. You don't need to think of yourself as an artist, crafter, or maker to try similar experiments. If this kind of storytelling intrigues you, we encourage you to contact scholarslab@virginia.edu to see how our staff & makerspace might support you & the story your data can tell." As part of the 75th Anniversary of Gregory H. Swanson's successful case to desegregate the University of Virginia, I created a Storymap.

We wanted to share a bit more of the context of Swanson's actions in Charlottesville, and the far reaching ripple that's with us still today.

In case you missed it, this workbook is a guide to thinking through when and how to take risks as a higher ed worker.

It aims to help us differentiate between danger and discomfort, while also offering some practical information about how to protect yourself while taking meaningful action.

We bought a scanner to go through/digitize old family slides during a long-overdue visit back East. My sister and I opened up boxes that we haven’t looked at in decades—slides and photos of our dad’s time stationed in a mobile radio unit (?) in Sendai, Japan (1955-56) + early family trips
Boxes of labeled slide carousels in a box. An 8mm(?) canister home movie rests on top of the box Open box full of boxes of slides and 8mm home movies Me holding an old yellow Kodak film canister Two black-and-white photos of my dad in the army. In the left, he’s lounging among equipment, on the phone. In the right, he’s pointing at the camera, not quite ready for his closeup

I have so far encoded 2 letters, deployed a very drafty website and untangled a few knots cos git and GitHub and Jekyll are just like that.

And I’ve build the first floor of a Music place so far, adding some sidewalk too

#DHmakes
A photograph of half a building made of Lego. It’s a brown, white and black facade with some greenery and a grey and boring sidewalk. It has an open bar on the left, with an espresso machine.
