Dear #BBC

If you're going to use '[sic]' to denote a grammar or spelling error in a quotation, do check that it's actually incorrect first! 🙄

Bellum, Latin for 'war', is the origin of martial English words like 'belligerent', 'bellicose' and 'rebel'.

Bellum was a later form of the word. It had previously been duellum, before a 'DU > B' sound change, and Latin writers remembered and continued to use the old form too. This gave us 'duel'.

The English word ‘brief’ means “short”, while German ‘Brief’ and Dutch ‘brief’ mean “letter” – and yet they have the same origin.

These words all stem from Latin ‘brevis’, meaning “short”.

Zoom in on my new infographic to learn how it came to mean “letter” in many Germanic languages:

This is so deeply sad. It’s about people in their 60s without a place of their own having to rent. I have a friend in that situation. All our conversations are heartbreaking ones about loneliness and poverty.

It is often assumed that people of retirement age will no longer have housing costs to cover. But for a significant and growing group, this is far from the case

I totally agree with @jheathershaw.bsky.social , & have signed the petition. "Say it in English, only louder" was never a good way of dealing with the outside world; in current times, it's even less appropriate.
Languages education at all levels, especially higher, is under existential threat in the UK. It is an impoverished society which produces so few students interested in languages & a shortsighted state that cannot subsidise this public good through tough times. Pls consider signing.

If you are calling for Sir Keir Starmer to stand down, who ever you are, then you are doing Farage's work for him.

It's the way his desire for an election in 2027 comes about.

Just shut up and stop it. Let the government get on with the job we elected them to do - and which they ARE doing.
