Blizzard of the Month: Field Trip Sandwich
Tonight’s midnight movie, an encore presentation:
STEREO 8 (1983) As the popularity of eight-tracks begins to wane, a retired artist (Bo Svenson) and his old flame (Mary Woronov) search for tapes bearing his cover art. Their quest takes them to the lair of a reclusive audiophile with a sinister secret. Widely known for its ‘unlistenable’ soundtrack

Cosigned all the way down

The poll numbers only show everyone else what Gen X nonconformists have known for decades: We are a generation populated mostly by John Hughes villains who hold Ferris Bueller up as a role model & beloved mascot instead of seeing him as a shitty manipulating liar
Gen X discourse seems to have raised its head again. Look: if you think we're all supposed to be cool, you're thinking of the *counterculture*. Most people were & are not that. Speaking here as someone from pretty far in the underground of that time, most people my age were conformists.

Dear Diary,

Today I begin writing my 39th book, the working title of which is “How Did I Injure My Foot While Mostly Asleep In Bed?” It is a mystery.

As with the last seven volumes I may abandon the whole effort by midafternoon, but I wanted to let you know all the same.

In friendship,

Wendy

I can’t say that I have an absolute favorite or that this would be the finalist if I had to choose, but I do think about the ending of CINEMA PARADISO (1988) quite often

The Midnight Hotdog Listening Club is broadcasting from an internal littoral location and tonight’s selection, “…” by Anne Gillis (2021), feels like a thing we might hear emanating from a source just out of sight, or perhaps something imagined and not there at all

once again my insistence on playing certain music in my car at a volume my phone advises against has shaken the rearview mirror loose from its moorings. still: no regrets.

The creative process fascinates me, particularly when hotel stationery is involved
of interest: found, in my photos on my laptop, a pic from the hotel notepad on which I started work on "no children." I mention in the "This Year" book that this began on a boarding pass envelope. once I landed and got into my room I did this. "Derrida" I think refers to thoughts about erasure etc

This tale deserves a place in an anthology, a major award, both, everything:
🧵 Let me tell you the story of the first and only time I saw a snow blower in Virginia. Maybe 3-4 years ago we had a big storm of pretty heavy, wet snow. The geniuses in the apartment building next door got a friend to bring them a snow blower to try to clear their driveway. 1/
Maybe the City should do what VDOT does and contract local residents with snowblowers to plow the sidewalks during and after storms.

I’ll concede that the full-page letter contains a lot of truth – for instance, the out-of-body/third-person experience. Maybe someone now understands what their loved one experiences. But I can’t imagine that this will generally help the cause or decrease stigma. It might actually make things worse.
