Trying Leila Chatti When I see the article about the polar bears wandering into Russian homes I leave it open unread for a week and consider this trying. Because I am trying to be honest, I can't say I am doing my best, or even trying my best, but at the very least, at my very worst, I'm trying. I wake up, and this is trying, by which I mean I am sad and yet participate in the requisite functions of my life, usually without audible complaint or demonstrative suffering, trying, for others' benefit, to be polite, or (trying to be honest) because I am embarrassed to be suffering —but I also mean this, that I am sad and it is difficult, a trial, a circumstance that tries my patience, this sadness is so annoying, I'm so sad it drives me crazy. Like everyone else, I try to do the dishes, to remember birthdays, not to pick at my degenerate skin. Because I am female I try to fulfill domestic labors like cleaning out the fridge and unreciprocated kindness, I try to improve my appearance without making it evident I care about my appearance, I try to care about the right things while making it clear I am still trying, with my appearance, so that men might consider fucking me, and I should consider this (privately) the measure of my worth. And because I am American I try to keep up with the crisis de l'heure, with domestic politics and public displays of rage, I try to be productive, I try to remember reusable bags for my produce, to reduce my footprint, to check pronouns and my privilege, I try to do my part, to cause little harm, but because I am alive harm comes with the territory, the territory upon which I rent is stolen, the city gentrified, and all year an unseasonable heat that I, minor accomplice, have to try very hard not to delight in, short sleeves in February, sweating through Halloween, I admit it, for no defensible reason I still eat meat, still drive on occasion to the CVS down the street, I've been known to tell a joke that verges on mean, I'm trying, I mean it, to be good, to be good in a way that is not covertly gendered or self-serving, to be accountable, to practice virtue without announcement, to make at least half as good what I leave as how I found it-trying for you, inkblot, mirage, standing in the artificial dawn on cold tile, golden dew on a stick, first snow pawing at the window to get in.

LITTLE SPY IN MY BEDROOM By Yusef Komunyakaa November 30, 2020 What's that ticking sound under the red velvet sofa, breathing a little click-song stolen from South Africa, perched on a windowsill or lost in a coffin drawer singing a half-pint of good luck, aping such big emotion? Whatever it is, it materialized up here on the second floor, as if from my head—the silent timekeeper's rasping alarm. I pace around the room, careful not to trip on the tiger rug, to search out the mechanical night song of a small being. What good can it bring now in our highly evolved world of climate change & hunting death stars to give the names of hermit kings & outlaws. Love, have I always listened with my whole damn body, 18k. tick of a pocket watch? I rise, gazing into an inlaid box of hex signs & cheap rings. Now I hardly hear the faint noise, yet know it is here. I cover my eyes with my left hand to hear the machine pulse of a careless heart, & in a patch of early-morning sunlight I see a black cricket. Someone kicks off her shoe before I can think to say, No, one of us must show mercy.

The Fujita performance at The Orange Show was in one of the warehouses & extremely cold - an observation, not a complaint. I hoped for a fire barrel, but no such luck

There WAS a fire barrel at the coldest show I ever attended - almost precisely 35 years ago last night. I still think about it A LOT

December 5: FUJI|||||||TA | Orange Show World HQ FUJI|||||||||| TA is a sound artist living in Japan who improvises otherworldly, slowly shifting soundscapes inspired by the natural world. He performs using a glass pipe organ designed and built by the artist in 2009. This completely unique instrument has only eleven pipes, an air pump modeled after a blacksmith's bellows, and no keyboard. Performing internationally since 2006, FUJI||||||IIIITA has worked with the Boredoms, Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, and Rashad Becker. This event will appeal to open-minded people who like experimental music, sound art, contemporary classical music, and performance art. $25 general admission.

Homely but delicious: Banoffee Pie
An espresso whipped cream-topped pie in particularly flattering light. By the time you read this it will already be gone. Banoffee Pie - King Arthur Flour cookbook Ingredients One 9-inch single piecrust, blind-baked ⅔ to 1⅞ cups (7 to 14 ounces) prepared dulce de leche* 3 medium bananas (about 1¼ pounds before peeling) 1 cup (8 ounces) heavy cream 2 tablespoons sugar (superfine preferred) ½ teaspoon espresso powder or instant coffee Method Spread the dulce de leche over the bottom of the baked, cooled crust. The greater amount, which the original recipe calls for, will give you a very sweet dessert; the lesser amount (or something in between) may be more suitable to your taste. Just eyeball it while you're spooning in the dulce or caramel and quit when you think the layer is thick enough. Peel the bananas and halve them lengthwise. Lay them atop the filling, starting in the center and working outward, cutting the bananas to fit as necessary. If you're really clever, you can pick the banana that's curved about the same as your pie plate to form the outermost layer. Put the cream, sugar, and espresso powder in a large bowl and whip it until it's thick. Spoon it atop the bananas. Serve immediately, or refrigerate until you're ready to serve.

Decided that I am bringing Devil’s Chutney to the potluck
KUMQUAT MARMALADE• Wash kumquats, slice crosswise into little wheels, discarding all seeds. Measure i cup sugar (white cane) to every cup fruit and cook slowly over low fire until mixture reaches the thickness of marmalade. Try not to overcook as mixture becomes too thick, but if this occurs simply add a little water and cook again until right consistency. Do not add water in the beginning as fruit gives off plenty of juice. Stir often so sugar will not stick to pot and scorch. A bay leaf or two may be added. However, I did not use it. Any kind of clean jar may be used as vacuum sealing is not necessary. Good luck, you really can't mess it up. The only work involved is cutting up the little devils! Mrs. Ruth Hoefeld Bay St. Louis, Miss. DEVIL'S CHUTNEY 1 onion 1/2 red pepper (remove seeds) (hot pepper) small slice (1/2 inch) fresh ginger or 1/4 tsp. ground ginger salt to taste 2 cloves garlic Grind all ingredients in your blender except the onion. Add the onion, a little white sugar and the juice from one lemon. Note: Wonderful with cold cuts, sandwiches or served with rice. Very hot. Mrs. William (Joan) Craig ROSE LEAF SPOON SWEETS 1/2 lb. cleaned rose petals 3 lb. sugar 3 c. water 1 oz. lemon juice To prepare petals: Remove and separate rose petals from calyx, laking care to remove all stamen. Using kitchen shears, cut off white base of petals. Wash thoroughly in a large bowl, taking care not to bruise. Drain. Into large saucepan containing 3 cups water, drop petals and boil for 2 minutes. Add sugar, gradually stirring (with wooden spoon) only until sugar is dissolved. Boil over high heat for approximately 10 min-utes, or until syrup is ready. Add lemon juice and continue boiling for 1 minute. To test syrup: Dip spoon into syrup. Allow to drip onto plate. Il the last drop remains on spoon and will not drip, the spoon sweet is ready.
