Growing up in very rural Scotland in the 80s local phone numbers were 3 digits. Easy to remember, no longer even good for pin numbers

I'd have thought it might make a difference, but this quote suggests not
waterstoneslhx.bsky.social
Very much pictures and colour. I notice when a writer describes flavour or aroma too, and like the chance (depending on whats described) to recreate that. What i hadn't much considered is how writers picture things, or not, and what difference that makes to how a reader can interpret their story

It feels like an anomaly, and relatively frivolous, but doesit ever confound expectations of what a classic is.

Still have angry flashbacks to A level English teacher earnestly declaring that nobody could write women like DHL, cheerfully writing off generations of actual women's writing as well as being so obviously wrong

“I had read Hemingway and Remarque for years. I thought they knew everything about war. But they didn’t know mine.”

Other booksellers- what is it in your shops?
waterstoneslhx.bsky.social
What do booksellers argue about? In our shop its mostly about where books go. Is it romance, horror, or fantasy? A gifting edition or a limited edition hardback? Did a customer put it there or do we really have someone who thinks a man called Don wrote a book called Cerventes?

I've given into peer group pressure and started Blood Over Bright Haven. Colleagues have adored it so I have very high hopes

My Thatcher100 anecdote.

Summer 1998. I am a keen shot and have narrowly squeezed into the GB under-25s rifle shooting and am shortly off to Canada for its annual open competition and the match vs the Canadians.

My book Our Island Stories: Country Walks Through Colonial Britain shows that Enclosure was often paid for with slavery wealth. The two histories are entangled.

1. On reparation for transatlantic slavery.
I have not read Lenny Henry's book yet but I want to provide some general context in the face of his apparent shock suggestion

My *major* occult discovery POSSESSED, a novel by Rosalie and Edward Synton (real surname Corse-Scott), has a cover! It's out on December 4 - I'm *really* excited for you to read the book and my 5,000 word introduction which gives life to the authors and a critical overview of the novel.

I did English at undergrad, media & politics at PhD. I run a research agency (when I'm not writing), using linguistics & anthropology/ethnography skills I learned at university. Through this, I pay tax & I pay people. In a very literal sense, my degrees make an economic contribution

BUT... (1/2)

Badenoch and Co see education only as a means to a massive income in some soul destroying career.

Devoid of imagination and the power of knowledge they view life entirely through the prism of the CV.

My advice always is to study what interests you and the rest will follow

Thoroughly enjoying Murder Before Evensong on 5. Is it as good as the book? (The book is always better isn't it!)
