Am particularly happy about this *11 October* Bham Lit Festival event featuring our new #ColonialCountryside project book (pub. by @peepaltreepress.bsky.social). It's the outcome of our work with the National Trust on its country houses' connections to empire

Backstage shot of our wonderful panel Birmingham Lit Fest yesterday- a really thought provoking discussion with Casey Bailey @corinnefowler.bsky.social & Malachi McIntosh on the theme of Colonial Countryside - how do we tell colonial stories in the houses that are scattered across the country?

You were brilliant & you got the most claps. Would be good to continue embracing a politics of hope & truth, as you've been doing. And, much needed & rarely seen, calm, unshouty political debate to inspire us all to rise above the toxicity. Enjoy my great, integrated city tomorrow!

1. On reparation for transatlantic slavery.
I have not read Lenny Henry's book yet but I want to provide some general context in the face of his apparent shock suggestion

My book Our Island Stories: Country Walks Through Colonial Britain shows that Enclosure was often paid for with slavery wealth. The two histories are entangled.

Reparations for Enclosure Act 1773 victims too.

4. Tthe Windrush generation, descended from the enslaved, were denied credit or bank accounts when they arrived in the 1940s, and had to start up their own savings and credit system known as the Pardner Hand (still in operation today): www.bankofengland.co.uk/museum/whats...

3. Racism is a legacy of slavery. Reparation £ can be used to repair its harms & address its causes.//Meanwhile, the 1830s slavery compensation scheme loan was finally paid off in 2015, hence many Black Britons had to repay the loan used to compensate those who enslaved their ancestors.

2. In the Caribbean, suggested forms of reparation aren't usually compensation paid to individuals, but returning land that was used for slavery plantations/addressing the diabetes crisis (an intergenerational legacy of enslaved people's diets)/ funding slavery research centres..

2. The current rhetoric of those who mobilise racism for political gain proposes that those who investigate colonial history and modern racism are the problem. Not racism itself.

1. On political gaslighting. Yesterday Jenrick defended his comments on Handsworth by lashing out at 2 pieces of work I was centrally involved with to imply it's people like me who are divisive, not him...

3. Meanwhile Jenrick says he's concerned that "people are living parallel lives". Yet his home county identifies as 96.9% white and his constituency identifies as 98% white. The parallel universes in his own back yards speak volumes. Meanwhile, Handsworth is one of Britain's most diverse areas.
