The Forgotten Knight went so quiet around Starlight. Business remained steady, though the atmosphere seemed more somber as the rest of the city brightened with fleeting cheer. The festivities would not last, but the winter always remained. Gibrillont did not comment on the differences, but he could not pretend he did not see them as he collected empty tankards from abandoned tables. The group in the corner had lost a member and gained another. The Heavens' Ward no longer shadowed the door, hoods covering their faces but posture revealing them before they d so much as ordered a drink. A short woman stacked extra gil on the counter when the barkeep turned his back, her smile secretive the one time he'd caught her and asked about it. He used the extra profits to purchase too much bread and left the excess out in the Brume most nights. The poverty was still there, the grief, but some of the fear had gone. It burned low like the fire at the bottom of the stairs, flickering faint but warm over the couple that huddled at the corner table, their ward long sent to bed. Their heads bent close, features cast in every shade of orange and shadow. Gibrillont grabbed two glasses, sighing when they clanked too loudly against each other. No cracks, but a disruption in the silence. A few fingers of whisky, poured and delivered to the worn hands folded over the wooden tabletop soft as skin where it had once been rough. Wordless, nodded thanks loosened the knot in his chest. Business was good, shared silence better.

While he may not enjoy toying with their lives or wasting blood like others did, he couldn't fool himself anymore. He was a murderer, a blight upon the world, even if the men and women he hunted were stains upon society. It may be his way to be good, but he wasn't Good. Even as a human, he had studied the often-bloody histories of the world, the way humanity would turn from peace to violence to peace again within the blink of an immortal's eyes. He'd been fascinated with those of the past, of how different they may have dressed or spoken or thought or loved when compared to those like him, who lived their lives looking backwards. Wringing one's hands over the binary of good and evil was worthless — it may have taken him decades to learn this, with the many lessons he'd been provided, but it was clear now. And as a despicably-human hunter's body fell to the floor with a dull thud, he at least knew that they weren't Good either. As the scent of cooling blood and viscera filled the air, his mind turned unexpectedly to his days as a human, learning the fairytales of his brethren. That incubus and succubus were ugly demons who only visited their victims in their dreams. That shapeshifters were unable to maintain a form for long, having to live in remote places to avoid being spurned by humanity. That witches were evil-doers, that fae were cruel, callous beings. That werewolves were normal men outside of the full moon. With the way Thancred ripped into the jugular of a now-wailing hunter and snapped the spine of another nearby with ease, he could laugh. In another life he would have made a grizzly vampire, G'raha thought, so it was a good thing that he'd been bitten by a rogue werewolf. He was lucky, G'raha thought as he advanced to the few hunters left at this lookout, unable to call out or communicate to any others for the spell Y'shtola had weaved. To be turned and abandoned. A much better fate than to be turned and used as a weapon. It had taken him so much time to realize, time to be surrounded by the ragtag family of supernaturals he now gladly fought side-by-side with. Before that, he'd thought it was normal to be subservient to one's Sire, to do their bidding, and hunting, and fucking.
