The Forgotten Knight went so quiet around Starlight. Business remained steady, though the atmosphere seemed more somber as the rest of the city brightened with fleeting cheer. The festivities would not last, but the winter always remained. Gibrillont did not comment on the differences, but he could not pretend he did not see them as he collected empty tankards from abandoned tables. The group in the corner had lost a member and gained another. The Heavens' Ward no longer shadowed the door, hoods covering their faces but posture revealing them before they d so much as ordered a drink. A short woman stacked extra gil on the counter when the barkeep turned his back, her smile secretive the one time he'd caught her and asked about it. He used the extra profits to purchase too much bread and left the excess out in the Brume most nights. The poverty was still there, the grief, but some of the fear had gone. It burned low like the fire at the bottom of the stairs, flickering faint but warm over the couple that huddled at the corner table, their ward long sent to bed. Their heads bent close, features cast in every shade of orange and shadow. Gibrillont grabbed two glasses, sighing when they clanked too loudly against each other. No cracks, but a disruption in the silence. A few fingers of whisky, poured and delivered to the worn hands folded over the wooden tabletop soft as skin where it had once been rough. Wordless, nodded thanks loosened the knot in his chest. Business was good, shared silence better.

monologue is a bit rare for me, but this piece was the closest to it i’ve been in some time, and writing their povs swapping was really gratifying here

Sidurgu felt a dull sort of surprise to find his heart beating. More stunning was the realization that, with his head hanging low, the wrist he could see disappearing into his chest belonged to Wren, and Wren's hand was wrapped around his heart. Something strange was happening to their shadows in the fading light. She was crying. Quietly, but he knew by the set of her jaw. Best not to jostle her, probably, considering their position. He folded her into his arms anyway, feeling her fingers form a tighter snare. Just for a breath, shaky but deep. What a thing to leave, still throbbing, in her palm. Alarm was likely rational, but he felt none of it. Regardless of what she still wrestled with, she'd fought off a shade conjured from his memories and saved his ward. Hells, she'd trusted him enough to believe that she could take the painful tucked deep in his chest, that it belonged to her. If it wasn't for Wren, you'd be dead by now. "It's alright." Thick with tears, her voice cracked on a sob. "You're alright. You're alright." Her aether had stopped pouring from his chest at some point. Even as she released his heart, he dreaded the space left around it. That she was kind enough to tear herself free slowly did nothing to keep him from feeling acutely that she was no longer buried in his chest. He stared. It should strike him as strange that the wound, while grievous, no longer looked mortal. The abyss had always created something to show, and what Wren had taken, she seemed to have replaced with something else — already fading and as intangible as anything more than water in the wind. Hers, as marked as the shadows had been. His chest felt full. Sidurgu coughed. Some blood came up, but none of it appeared new. He felt well enough. Death apparently averted, his attention turned to the trembling weight perched over his lap. "You're alright," she said again. What she saw, her gaze still locked on his chest, he had little idea. She'd had to tug his gauntlets off before the rest of his armor. All the better — his hands were gentle when he took her face in his hands. She looked at him, and he let them fall. "I'm alright," he assured her when her eyes met his. "So are you." It wasn't that Wren looked like the seven hells; it was that she appeared very much like someone out of myth to drag him back from them. Remnants of tears tracked down her face in paths of salt, the crimson smear he'd seen earlier nearly washed away. There was still blood, smeared thick as a glove, climbing halfway up her forearm, her other hand no better. He reached for them.

while they’re pretty simple, this is my favorite set ever, and i’ve tried to recreate it with wren’s recent scaling and hair updates, but i just can’t capture the same magic

"Not such a hard thing to do. Not your fault, either." The burn in your throat matches the pain of the needle he'd pulling through your frayed edges. He's got a voice rougher than his hands, but the intentional gentleness in both make it worse. "Do you mean that?" The quiet fills the galley. It seems to ripple over the ship, rejoining the water as you wait for assurance he cannot give. It's almost an answer when he secures the bandage just tightly enough around your wounds, the pressure nearly enough to something still unmended together. "Yeah." Clearly considering whether to say more, he rubs the nape of his neck. "But running off to hide like an injured stray isn't helping either of you." He stands, throws the bloodied rags in a nearby crate, reaches for the rum and refills your glass. On the way out, his lighter flares. He's gone before the smoke can linger. It takes half an hour and as much of the bottle to get you out of your head and onto the deck. Benn's with the crew, smoking and laughing. But he catches sight of the door opening and meets your gaze, jerking his chin toward the captain's quarters. Of course.

The prince with hair like rubies lit aflame lounges on an overstuffed chaise that's likely seen no use in decades. Someone had magicked away the wine stain he'd left when he last visited the court, but the little crescent moons in the wood are still there, gouged into the frame as an alternative to his brother's still-scarless face. The hand that had done the damage has been gone for some time - most of his arm, too. It is already an old wound. Where his own family's court sets his shoulders taught, Shanks feels as though he can breathe again in your home. More garden than palace, it grows wild as this king's daughters, well-nourished and offered both sunlight and rain. The princesses are lovely enough, flourishing down their strong roots. You are not one of them, but it is so evident in your eyes, the quality of the place, the goodness blooming in you, the seed of his happiness planted outside his body, always at your feet. He is not seeking you out to convince you to marry him. He only mean to content himself with the fleeting, familiar comfort of existing in your space. Still, there are centuries between you, and for all his intentions, your dress is sheer and your back is in the grass. He settles near, hair a burning curtain as he leans over you to whisper something sweet beneath the birdsong. You want for nothing, but you wish for him.
