This is what is upsetting about Ann Arbor City Council’s push to site dense housing on arterials with Transition and Hub land use categories and cap Residential at three story triplexes. Dense housing near schools and neighborhood parks is as close to transit, but healthier.

#A2Council #AnnArbor
The idea that being on an arterial means being close to transit has always been a bald faced lie that enables classist, racist zoning.

Anyone who thinks about the geometry for 2 seconds can see through it!
In honor of the City finally releasing the Corridor maps, this sketch illustrates why living on an arterial is not the same as being close to transit.

A huge 89% majority of global people [56% even in the United States] want stronger action to fight the #ClimateCrisis, but mistakenly believe they’re in a minority.

The “silent majority” for #ClimateAction needs to get loud.

People want action. Smart cities need to go much further, much faster.
Activate climate’s ‘silent majority’ to supercharge action, experts say
Making concerned people aware their views are far from alone could unlock the change so urgently needed

This is the vicious cycle that happens in every city that lacks (A) visionary and brave electeds or (B) visionary and brave engineers.

Both are rare (the latter more so), and so we are trapped in an endless loop of doing absolutely nothing besides repaving our roads like they were in 1950.
Traffic engineers will say “we can only build what the council approves” and council members will say “we can only look at what the traffic engineers present to us” and nothing ever gets fixed and people keep dying

#A2Council should consider some of these treatments on nearby side streets when major roads are calmed.

It should go without saying, but safe streets includes safe from Brownshirt thugs murdering and kidnapping folks.

Cities that float lofty Vision Zero goals without following up have just ZERO VISION and political courage. Los Angeles is a key example of those cities, as limited progress has been made since 2016.

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath

Some costs aren’t costs.
One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

Dropped into the meeting Rainier Valley Safe Streets hosted tonight to get feedback from community members on potential council-funded safety investments.

It lasted about 10 minutes before being interrupted by someone complaining about how "no one" uses the bike lanes on the South End.

Justin we love you but as a chart enthusiast you're too smart to post charts with arbitrary start points and linear trendlines. Here's a couple we made, with the same data, that shows traffic fatalities are on the rise!

But onto a more serious analysis of this 🧵

I’m hoping that the Ann Arbor delegation can get behind this and that City Council can put it on their Policy Agenda. Intelligent Speed Assistance technology just makes sense and it would be great to see #Michigan join other states in doing this.

Michigan Rep Farhat of Dearborn proposed legislation last May allowing speed limiting devices for repeat offenders to reduce reckless driving. Might be more effective than suspending drivers' licenses. The legislation has not been introduced yet.

Coverage of our abject failure in meeting our Vision Zero commitments in 2025. Ann Arbor’s City Council needs to make sure we follow through on all the designs and studies and targets and actually make infrastructure improvements to make pedestrians safe on our streets.

2025 was a rough year for transportation reformers. I spent much of it thinking about ways to build support for car-free streets, transit expansions, bike lanes, etc.

Here are a few stories where I shared what I’ve learned. 🧵

Vancouver’s transit is free for New Year’s Eve and into the wee hours, ensuring everyone has a safe way to get home. In Ann Arbor, AAATA shuts down service early. How many people will drive drunk tonight? #A2Council
Reminder that TransLink is FREE tonight after 5pm! With additional service too.

Have a great night tonight and plan to get home safe! Happy New Years from us at VZV 🎉

Or sometimes the authorities *don't* take action to address dangerous road design after it kills someone. Or even multiple someones.

We should not have to pay for safe streets with blood.
It says a lot about our society that authorities often take action to address dangerous road design only after it kills someone.

It says even more that the usual response is thoughts, prayers, or a shrug.

Given that there does not appear to be an appetite for municipal sidewalk snow removal in Ann Arbor, and the existing complaint-driven system is clearly not working with major corridors going over a week before being reasonably passable, we would like to see the following happen:
