I haven't even gotten to recommending DAWs or plugins yet and I think I just typed the most important part of this So You Want To Be A Musician piece.
Whatever you decide to do, just do it because it sounded cool. Whether you're viewing this statement from the position of the level of education you want to have, or if you plan to start selling what you do on Bandcamp. There are a lot of people making music and the music industry is an absolute mess. The people that are meant to hear what you make don't always immediately find it and when capitalism tries to take control of every second of our lives, when something doesn't have a massive reception it can be easy to fall into this feeling like "My free time is so limited, this didn't 'do well', maybe this is a waste of time." This train of thought is poison, especially to art. The absolute most important piece of advice I can give you as a musician is no matter what, make your music for you first and foremost before anyone or anything else. You can be generous with what you make and give it away, but be selfish in the sense that you're making it because it's what you want to hear. I make a lot of ambient music and I give some of it away to help people sleep or calm down from how stressful The News is but before they ever hear it, the first reason I made it was because I wanted it to exist. Monthly listeners don't matter, your priority should be that you made something you wanted to hear, or tried to.

discography update
(screenshot of the body of a blog post on my Newgrounds page) hi all, i have some fairly important news: first, all of the non-Dreamer releases on my Bandcamp are now PWYW: https://vekon.bandcamp.com/ so go ahead and grab some free music if you want! i haven't sold many individual releases and considering my dense release schedule i hope that offering a subscription service there and on Patreon will be more beneficial and fair for both you and me another thing: alongside new music releases this year i will be remastering most of my existing discography under vekoN. atm i plan on remastering everything before Prisme. i already have some WIP remasters on my hard drive and i plan to have a few re-releases ready very soon. the truth is, not only were my older songs... not entirely representative of my vision, but also i don't believe in abandoning ideas - my discography is a continual work-in-progress. that and making a million VIPS will be weird :) the remasters will replace the existing uploads on Bandcamp and SoundCloud. once i start uploading them the older versions will be available for free here: https://vekonarxve.bandcamp.com. i'll let you all know when i replace them a few days beforehand lastly, with all this in action i'm not exactly sure what to do with the releases on the streaming platforms... my current plan is to keep them up until my distributor plan expires in July; before then i might upload the individual remastered songs myself, possibly on YouTube, ideally on some other platform... PeerTube or Funkwhale perhaps? imo i'm not keen on the big streaming platforms' ethics and financial returns anymore. i'm open to suggestions for this plan though! that's it, thanks for the continuing support and i'll see you at the next release :)
