We are facing a pivotal moment right now. After the horrific attack at Bondi, many of us are grieving, shaken, and afraid. What we do next matters enormously. This should be a moment of unity and care, a moment to confront antisemitism in ways that genuinely make Jewish people safer without endangering anyone else. Instead, we are seeing our grief being weaponised to push for division and hate. The far-right have jumped on this moment to spread Islamophobia and push an anti-immigration agenda. The Antisemitism Envoy’s plan was dead in the water, but now she too is taking this moment as an opportunity to push her own divisive agenda. Her plan deepens division, pits communities against one another, and mirrors an authoritarian playbook that has failed everywhere it has been tried. Let’s be clear: 1 Empowering fear-based narratives only strengthens the far right — the very forces that thrive on racism and antisemitism. 2 Blaming this horrific act of violent antisemitism on peaceful protest against the actions of the Israeli government is dangerous and irresponsible. 3 Pushing divisive policies to censor universities, monitor media, and punish civil society, in the name of Jewish safety, will only make all of us less safe. We are already seeing the consequences. In addition to what we have been experiencing since Sunday, Muslim, Palestinian and Arab communities are all reporting surges in abuse. This is what happens when leaders abandon solidarity and choose scapegoating instead. There is another path. Effective action against antisemitism is solidarity-based, rights-protecting and system-focused. It reduces harm by strengthening democracy — not hollowing it out. That is why the Jewish Council of Australia is calling on the government to reject the Envoy’s divisive plan and act on measures that actually save lives and rebuild trust.

NSW has had "an explosion in gun numbers" with >1 million guns across the state. "Over 258,000 pple hold firearms licences. Most list recreational hunting of feral animals as the reason for their licence." Primary producers are a small fraction of license-holders.

Anne Davies (Guardian) "Successive state govts in NSW have had an ambivalent approach to gun control over the past 2 decades since Port Arthur prompted an Australia-wide crackdown. The reason is the power of the pro-gun party in NSW represented in parliament by the Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party, which holds key numbers in the state's upper house. The single-issue party may only hold 2 seats in the Legislative Council, but they're often crucial to getting legislation thru, particularly when there is opposition from the progressives on the crossbench. The Shooters have also made inroads in the lower house by winning regional seats or coming close, usually at the expense of the NSWNationals. In the past 6 months, the Minns Labor govt has demonstrated its susceptibility to the shooting lobby by openly entertaining support for a private member's bill that proposed a right to hunt & would've allowed recreational hunting in state forests & crown lands. After pushback from victims' groups & Walter Mikac, whose children Alannah & Madeleine were killed at Port Arthur, Minns baulked at enshrining the right to hunt, & changes that would have allowed the use of silencers & night vision goggles (which were opposed by NSW police as well). The premier eventually also said no to a hunting authority (even tho it was in the state budget), which many feared would lead to a govt-funded lobby group for hunters. But Minns was still toying with allowing the bill to be debated in govt time as late as a few weeks ago. There has certainly been no debate abt clamping down on guns in NSW over the past decade, despite some high-profile incidents. The result of NSW's approach has been an explosion in gun numbers - which now total over 1m across the state. Over 258,000 people hold firearms licences. Most list recreational hunting of feral animals as the reason for their licence. The number held by primary producers - often cited as why guns are needed - is a small fraction in comparison."
