Apropos of nothing:

If I haven't turned off replies, anyone is welcome to respond to my posts. I know the difference between social media and a private group chat, so I'm not going to go all Surprised Pikachu and pretend you're intruding on my privacy just because you replied to an open post.

Hadn't ever seen it put so concisely as that, though I've been drifting in similar directions ever since noticing the trend among older PF1 GMs to respond to creative solutions by asking for checks one by one for as long as it took to get a failure.

Lately I'm occasionally seeing the TTRPG scene inch its way toward the realization/reckoning that a lot of folks in the space don't actually like to play RPGs.

I want that to happen, obviously, but also I don't know how I'll handle *witnessing* it, after all the shit I took for noticing it early.

Okay also I know this is totally off-topic but would you happen to know what font this is?
Screenshot of a heading from the OP's linked blog post that reads, "A Different Kind of Novelty." It's in a traditional-looking serif font.

Okay so at the end there you weren't sure what to play next. Have you considered Sword World 2.5? It would have some novelty since it's from the other side of the world, might offer some fresh perspectives, you know? And I wonder if it fits the length you were looking for. Fan translation's free.

isn't this just US foreign policy?

I think one thing holding back the tabletop RPG space from what it could be is the reflex to attribute absolutely every culture problem to people coping with DnD sucking. We can't start solving real problems until we stop shirking analysis by falling back on The DnD Shrug™️

Me explaining dual-type Pokemon to someone who only plays the TCG
unboxedcereal.bsky.social
Good games *do* have that problem, when players think the point is to do something other than literally play a game. IME, "don't let the rules get in the way of the story" is one of the biggest areas of overlap between elfgamers and fishknifers.

look i'm just saying if friday the 13th is unlucky then how much worse must monday the 13th be, right?
unboxedcereal.bsky.social
IME it's about half-and-half between people advising you to ignore the rules in an elfgame, and avid indies explaining why a given fishknife is superior to elfgames.

Oh, sorry, I was more talking about gameplay. The fact we've got legacy PvP splitting off into Champions, and therefore Legends being free to try different mechanical frameworks, is a good omen for play.

For art style, I personally don't mind it, but I can sympathize.

Pokemon was good back when 90s-era JRPGs were still in the zeitgeist of both players and devs, but then it started drifting aimlessly and really needed to be reinvented in a different genre. The branching off of Legends and Champions is the most hope I've had in a while.

Maybe next time I'll switch to positive vibes with "Yo"

#ttrpg creating folks, does anyone know if there's a canva template out there that can be used for Drivethru card creation?

(Boosts for reach appreciated 💜)

I assume this is how I would sound trying to ask someone about their history too lol

Sadly, I didn't have enough characters for "Oh hell"
unboxedcereal.bsky.social
It's worth noting that this nonsense seems to be unique to TTRPG spaces. If a chess player said "Don't let the rules get in the way of the strategy," they'd be laughed out of the room. Do the equivalent here and it's treated as enlightenment.
unboxedcereal.bsky.social
Rules define a game. So when a TTRPG person says "don't let the rules get in the way of [thing]," 99% of the time it literally means they want to do that other activity *instead of playing a game*.

One thing I think gets confusing in discussions of RPG mechanics is the way people sometimes use "the mechanics get out of the way" to mean "I can ignore the mechanics"/"we didn't need to roll dice all session"

I know this is petty but that blog that was hyping Fabula Ultima talked about how cool it was that it lets you get wild on descriptions of basic attacks but also cited another blog saying Assassin's Creed putting fancy visuals on spamming the X button DOESN'T make it cool and that disconnect BUGS me
