and obviously as someone who has not delved deep into many MMOs my take may be (and likely is) uncharitable, failing to acknowledge the deep player histories that DO exist in these games! that shit is awesome! but i want a world which is shaped by those things, not just a container for them

and obviously none of this is to poopoo on people who want to tell stories through games. but often enough when i feel like i want to experience a game's story what i really want is the novelization. which is why i appreciate the rare gem of a story that feels like it can only be told through a game

i'd waste years of my life delivering mail between players if i could. or wandering the far reaches of the world and helping people that i meet. running a bar that appears and disappears with the wind when someone needs a place to stop

i think i'm just not a fan of being the protagonist, if that makes sense. i like the idea of being just one part of something big. i like the idea of being... not necessarily mundane or unimportant? (though i don't mind mundane) but obscure... working in the background

i mean, obviously, an mmo's world and stories and quests and whatever are designed by people. a singleplayer story is crafted by people.

but it often feels too 'finely tuned' for my taste, i guess? it's difficult to articulate, lol

it's also why i try to have ugc tooling in all the stuff i make. playing custom level packs for rolled out was some of the most fun i ever had in my life, because like... what? someone liked this thing i made enough that it made *them* want to create something for it? that's so amazing to me

this is also why i like pvp games, and games with lots of user generated content. the feeling of interacting with other people on any level is really profound and special to me, whether it's beating someone's ass in overwatch or driving around on their weird motorcycle dupe in gmod

this is honestly the thing that turns me off a lot of singleplayer games too. i like when something feels like it's 'real', i guess? like when what you're doing connects with other real people in some tangible way.

in this way i find minecraft to be probably one of the most interesting online games, because it's a game where you can experience worlds created by the people who live within those worlds, rather than above them as a 'designer'.

one of the reasons i don't like a lot of MMOs is the sense of artificiality. the reason i would want to experience a game full of other real people is to see and live in the world that they have built to service their needs, to follow the stories that arose naturally from their time playing

You should be able to level each fairy up to level 9999 and rebirth them as a special new fairy with an alternate colour palette
