Butterflies are often associated with the mythical Tylwyth Teg, the Welsh fairy folk. Legend tells of an enchanted island with beautiful flowers and butterflies belonging to the Tylwyth Teg, which humans could visit but were not to disturb.

In the Mabinogion, after Lleu was restored to human form, Gwydion sought revenge on Blodeuwedd. He punished her by turning her into an owl. In this new form, she was cursed to be hunted and reviled by all other birds and to only show her face at night.
