Single stair 🤝 parking reform

Connecticut’s now a national leader in parking flexibility, if the upcoming single stair codes are modernized we’ll have a recipe for infill housing on those hard-to-build lots in our towns and cities

“Parking adds both construction cost and opportunity cost due to land value being tied up in parking rather than housing. Those expenses get passed on to residents (renters or buyers)….”

To spur housing construction, Baltimore ends parking minimums
Opinion: Parking minimums are expensive and hamper new housing. A new law in Baltimore City is right to do away with them.

Interesting! Surprise link to our work on #parking: a convincing message in favor of flexible parking is that excessive parking makes for ugly, paved places—strip-mall development eroding main streets/charming downtowns. (Mandates can also make for ugly buildings. *That don’t “fit in”! Just sayin)
NEW PAPER w/ @cselmendorf.bsky.social & @jkalla.bsky.social:

An under-appreciated reason why voters oppose dense new housing, especially in less-dense neighborhoods: they think it looks ugly and want to prevent that, even in other neighborhoods.

Some of what we think is NIMBYism might not be!

Exciting!!!! Congrats CT folks!!
As of July 1, 2026 Connecticut will be henceforth known as the land without residential Parking Mandates!!!

A huge thank you to everyone who pitched in, testimony, emails, calls, op-eds, this was truly a statewide grassroots groundswell. What started as a silly idea is now reality

A victory 🏆🧵

Tomorrow is #BlackFridayParking!

Join us in highlighting why costly mandatory parking requirements are unnecessary by showcasing all the excess parking on the busiest shopping day of the year.

Take some pics and post them with the #BlackFridayParking tag!

Word
Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand.

If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers.

If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers.

Spread the word.

Overbuilt parking wastes money and space that communities can put to use for better things than empty asphalt! More homes, save trees, more local business investment.
A new study out of Denver shows that removing mandatory parking minimums can lead to more affordable housing being built.

By eliminating costly parking mandates, we can focus on creating homes that better meet community needs.

Baltimore just eliminated parking minimums, reduced lot line setbacks, and allowed single-stair buildings for buildings up to six stories

All without years of studies or prevarication. This is not just the path to rest belt revival, it is a model for cities nationwide

Same in Spokane. With a supermajority on council and a willing mayor, we have to run as fast as possible on issues like safe streets, transit, and urban infill.
In NJ, in VA, in NYC, it's time to get to work.

There are no permanent majorities. There are only moments of time when parties can assemble a majority of voters around a set of ideas. You have to take that moment and run as fast as you can, before the next election breaks your stride.
