I work in library automation and like to think about words. I sometimes make things out of plastic, wood, or yarn.

Wait. Hold up. We’re talking about rationing *pencils* now? Those things that are made out of an ounce of wood and sell for $3/dozen at Walmart? How bad is he expecting things to get?
Trump: "You can give up certain products. You could give up pencils. Because under the China policy, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need 1 or 2. They don't need that many. You always need steel. You don't need 37 dolls for your daughter. 2 or 3 is nice. So we're doing things right."

I read lots of takes about generative AI, but I never read anyone saying that it is kinda boring.

My unorthodox contribution to the Thanksgiving food discourse is that sour cream is an S-tier dessert topping and is better than whipped cream on pumpkin pie.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

So I know the Edmund Fitzgerald has become a bit of a meme in recent years, people love the song (correctly) and it's a huge deal in the Great Lakes.

But as someone who grew up in northern Michigan in the 80s, I thought you all might find it interesting to hear about how it affected us.

At least once a week, I think about the fact that Harry Emerson Fosdick preached a sermon against fundamentalism over 100 years ago and it was one of the most widely-read pieces of religious writing in America that year.

That would never happen today.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

I think it’s weird how people who have large platforms in the public sphere write and speak about universities as though their primary function is to host large public speaking events for ‘provocative’ thinkers.
And what sort of difficult speakers or ideas do you mean?

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Perhaps a tweak of the algorithm is in order.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
No thing beside remains. Perhaps a tweak of the algorithm is in order.
Time, that is intolerant
Of the brave and innocent
Worships language, and forgives
All of those who by it live.
Pardons cowardice, deceit
Lays its honors at their feet.
Perhaps a tweak of the algorithm is in order.
