To act in this world is to put yourself in moral peril, to shake the foundations of your own philosophy, sometimes overwhelmingly so. In such times, when you're no longer sure which way is right, where do you go? Who do you become?

I really love the videos @tomvanderlinden.bsky.social has been making and this one hits me deep inside. I love it when a movie makes you think about who you are as a person and additionally prompts you to rise up and change. The movies mentioned here did the same to me.

Next video is going to be classic Like Stories of Old; philosophical reflections, clips from like a 100 movies, evocative music, looking for meaning and hope in the dark
Well, in the cinema-related video essay space, it does look like a lot of the attention has shifted toward what I guess can be best called the post-cinemastix-movement, where a bunch of relatively smaller and newer creators are doing quite well
One more potential reason: more and better competition. I feel like young folks now have a much better grasp of the basics of editing, audio mixing, storytelling... etc., and new creators come out the gate swinging. Makes it harder for the old folks who have been mostly coasting on 'experience'
**Creators have also always come and gone, but don't think there has ever been as big of a 'generation' of full-time creators as we have now, and so we might just be seeing a more clearly pronounced version of that tipping point where bigger creators start losing more fans than they are gaining
* Trends have always come and gone but we could simply seeing a more significant change, though of course, this itself might be a temporary trend too...
- major shift in audience taste*
- state of the world causing general shift in cultural priorities
- continuation of cultural dilution; more creators/niches but smaller audiences for each of them
- result of the first large group of established creators moving past their peak**
Pretty much my experience as well, I'm still doing fine but it's been a strange year and I definitely feel like I've lost my grip on the 'audience' a bit. Don't think it's the algorithm, but I also can't really think of any other obvious changes that would explain this, so far all I got is...
Idk what dial YouTube turned but they definitely did something. Viewership is inexplicably down around 30% for myself and many channels I watch/follow. I've never blamed the algorithm for anything in my 10 years on YT, but this is too obvious to ignore. Spoken to others who have noticed it, too.
I hope the show finds its own direction, definitely has potential! But 3 episodes in I’m still kind of lukewarm about it
