Excellent thread on what should guide any Jobcentre engagement with disabled claimants (many of these principles should be standard across the whole UC system - not just for those currently exempt from conditionality).

DWP plans to introduce a ‘support conversation’ for disabled claimants who don’t currently meet a work coach. My new paper explores how this conversation can be done effectively and avoid causing harm 🧵

This is what we keep seeing- and keep saying- at Citizens Advice. Was in Durham today speaking to debt advisors and no one there thought the cost of living crisis had ended.

“I think politicians are ignoring prices and bills and hoping we’ll forget about them and find something else to complain about…”

My report on how the flighty Westminster bubble forgot about the cost-of-living crisis, which certainly isn't over:
Energy bills rise while Westminster talks immigration
Why have our politicians forgotten about the cost-of-living crisis?

US Open tennis has gone a bit in this direction too, tho obv nowhere near as bad. Very interesting that the Euro response was the milder/ funnier end of football chants - 'Are you watching Donald Trump?', "You've only got one song" etc. There is a less refined version of this they could reach for...

High costs are everywhere - moving in, making the place liveable, keeping up with daily essentials. Families placed out of area are also far from their support networks, pushing costs up even higher.

And all for accommodation that is often poor quality, miles away from where it's needed.

New @citizensadvice.bsky.social report on Temporary Accommodation. People know that it's really expensive for local authorities to house tenants in TA, but this report shows how expensive it is for the families too.

💡 Ofgem’s changes on standing charges won’t cut bills - lower charges just mean a higher cost per unit for energy.
Tinkering at the edges won’t help people this winter. We need long-term, targeted support for households facing record energy prices ⤵️

Energy standing charge options coming, but they might not cut bills
The regulator's plans could be in place by the end of January, but it warns total bills won't fall.

Our latest data shows that people’s problems are becoming more urgent and more complex.

And the systems designed to support them are harder to navigate than ever.

Join us on 25 September to hear from a panel of experts and explore our data ⤵️ https://bit.ly/41XFPsn #CADataInsights
Promotional graphic by Citizens Advice announcing an online event titled "Data Insights Unravelling Complexity to raise living standards," addressing the overlapping issues people are going to them about. Scheduled for Thursday 25 September from 2-3pm with a hashtag #CADataInsights.

Something like Minsky's theory of economic crises - "the rapid instability occurs because long periods of steady prosperity and investment gains encourage a diminished perception of overall market risk"

Yeah this is where my knowledge runs out tbh. Anyway, great signing. Utterly dominant summer from the PL, hoovering up talent - Sesko, Gyokeres, Simons, Wirtz, Ekitke, Woltemade. The players just behind the absolute elite

Germany U21s were very much loading it up and flinging it in at him at the Euros this summer

My Catalan ain't what it should be but I can guess what 'el neuròtic i agitat panorama del Barça' means...

I think Barcelona have been equally mismanaged off the pitch, but on the pitch you would barely notice. It's hard to be this bad.

And it feels like there's extra pressure to get it right this time - the new boss can't expect to even get a full season unless he's in the top 6.
tommacinnes.bsky.social
The biggest worry this season is that we're still reliant on the old guard (Nunez and Sargent) who are very likely to leave. Last year's signings still haven't stepped up, this year's will take a while
tommacinnes.bsky.social
It can absolutely do one. Rubbish.

lol no. I followed the live text on the BBC intermittently. They were hating it. And obviously quite loving it at the same time.

0-0 after 210 minutes of football is pretty impressive. And the teams had to travel 3000km each too. I'm saying it's up there, it's in the conversation.

There was some good chat here a while back about the glorious awfulness of Ukraine 0-0 Switzerland AET at the World Cup in 2006 - aka Probably the Worst Game of All Time. Is Kairat 0-0 Celtic in the second leg of the CL qualifiers (aggregate 0-0, heading to extra time) a rival?
