As we've all been talking about Bond today, why not enjoy the opening page of Ian Fleming's classic, "Goldfinger"?
James Bond prowled the isles of the B&Q like a caged tiger. A caged tiger who had somehow got out of his cage and had gone to his local B&Q with his mind set on buying some really nice shelves. Bond knew who he was. What he did. He wasn’t sentimental about it. He disliked killing but accepted it. It was part of the job. He was an instrument, a sanction, a machine. Cold. Efficient. Like a fridge. But a special fridge. A fridge with a licence to kill. What he did, he did for Queen & Country. But DIY was different. That was all for him. At last, he found the shelves he’d been looking for. They were good shelves. Taught and firm, like good shelves should be. Bond caressed the shelves gently but confidently, like a hunky panther, caressing some shelves. Bond’s mind boggled at the things he could put on the shelves when he’d finished putting them up. A bottle. Some spanners. A badly drawn picture of a dog. The options were limitless. “I see you’re admiring those shelves Mr Bond,” said a woman’s voice. James turned, drinking in the vision before him like a suave ocelot with a thirst on him. She was petite and elegant with elbows in all the right places, right between the upper arm and forearm, allowing her to bend and pivot her arms apparently at will. “You appear to have me at something of a disadvantage Miss…?” “Hotspy. Octavia Hotspy. I like a man who can hang a shelf. What say we get out of here so I can go against my employers and help you with your adventure before getting shot about a quarter of the way through the book?” “Miss Hotspy,” said James, taking out his B&Q discount card, “You read my mind.”

It's been a while, so here are my Ten Rules For Writing.
The Ten Rules for Writing: 1) Never write with a Pen. Real Writers only write with a sausage, dipped in the blood of other writers. 2) Kill your darlings. If you don't have any darlings, smash some peas with your fist. 3) Get used to explaining why you are crying to your pets. 4) A lot of your best ideas will come to you when you are staring into space, wondering why you are alive. 5) Always introduce yourself as a writer. Eventually, all the other people waiting for the bus will back away and just let you get on first. 6) Anything can be writing. A poem, a shopping list, running around B&Q naked with a hammer. 7) Creating characters with rich backstories and full lives is fun until you imagine them all silently watching you sleep, hour after hour, waiting to exist. 8) Every sentence you write must do one of three things, reveal character, advance plot, or provide the reader with an amazing opportunity to purchase Bitcoin. 9) Ignore advice. Unless it's coming from a disembodied voice telling you to get out of a creepy abandoned slaughterhouse. 10) Get over spells of worrying about your writing being pointless and meaningless by cleverly remembering that everything you do is pointless and meaningless.
