In Mar. 1942, my great-grandfather who was an Okinawan Nisei with a 3rd grade education, worked as a baker, and was not an important person was taken to Sand Island in Honolulu. On Dec. 27, he was sent on SS Lurline with more than 430 other Hawaiʻi Japanese and Okinawans to US concentration camps.

The roots and origin of this tea are assumed to have begun around 1587 during the Ryukyu Kingdom.

The photo with the ingredients showcases what is used: 無洗米（むせんまい Musenmai）、炒り米（いりごめ Irigome）、お赤飯（おせきはん Osekihan）、じーまみ (Jiimami)、さんぴん茶 (Sanpin-cha).

A little more on Bukubuku-cha. It's a type of furicha, a traditional Ryukyuan (Okinawan) tea. The tea was almost forced into extinction during-after the Battle of Okinawa. There were revival efforts in the 1950’s and it was officially restored in the 1980’s.

These sacred tattoos were banned in Okinawa. A new generation is bringing them back.
