Certainly could be turkey vultures. There's a big flock of them that live near my parents house and a lot of times in the afternoon you can look up and see like 3 dozen of them just circling the neighborhood.

It's definitely a series that aims younger. I have so many memories of playing the first one with my neighbor. The second game, which didn't make it to the US until the collection (and subsequent remake) was released several years ago was also really good.
