They badly bungled this. There are many applications of this technology (Missing child! Missing dementia patient! Abusive ex-husband kidnapped the kids! Dzhokhar Tsarnaev!) that most people would likely support if they trusted the company not to abuse the tech. 1/2

Ring is first and foremost a scheme to charge Amazon customers to deter crime that costs Amazon (not the customers themselves) billions annually in refunds, returns, double shipping, and customer service overhead.

Ahhh yes. I think that’s absolutely correct—also true about surveillance writ large: any failure is used as evidence that more is needed. The deeply embedded assumption is that it works.

This idea is a myth, in part, because correlation isn't causation. If families are able to homeschool without the kind of financial (or emotional or psychological) hardship that can really hurt kids, it's because they have a great deal of privilege on which to draw.

It's not the laws result in random adults calling the cops because they see an unattended 12yo on the swings.
It's the culture (and also, often, racism, but they do it to white kids too.)
