✍️New column!

From supporting those with HIV to live well, to prevention and testing, Brighton is at the forefront of the mission to end new HIV transmissions by 2030.

With the incredible work of @tht.org.uk in our city, 2030 is feeling very achievable.

Brighton could be first city in UK with no new HIV transmissions
We could become the first country in the world to achieve no new HIV transmissions.

☀️’Light will soon slice / through the blinds. / Lemons will roll across the floor. / Everything will be unbroken.’

😌 the wry charms of Mark Fiddes make for a very pleasant, restorative trip through the foibles of our present, much-travestied, meaning-bothered age. Worth picking up!

🇵🇱 back in #gdańsk for a bit and taking in the #jarmarkswiateczny - Stare Miasto is thrilling as usual!

👏 well said @sianberry.bsky.social - juries didn’t create our broken system, and scrapping them won’t fix its fundamental problems. Protect their presence in English and Welsh justice.

✍️ write to your MPs and let them know.
"The Labour Government is laying the groundwork for further crackdowns on dissent, whistleblowing and protest if it removes juries from so many charges that have state or corporate victims." - @sianberry.bsky.social

😊 I mean… I’m a D&D nerd, an Old English nerd, an adopted Brummie… this is no surprise to anyone, right?

What can I say? Well…

📖 It was the right time to return to it, having originally read it when I was a young teenager.

💚 for love of one’s friends and fellows and of the good earth - read it.

📖 “I know what will settle my anxiety today - curling up with a hot drink and the 2024 Evaluation Report for Violence Reduction Units in England and Wales…”

🤓 no joke. And it worked!

⚖️ I guess this is what I got onto the @greenparty.org.uk Crime and Justice Policy Working Group for, after all…

💚 been ripping through @mikaelaloach.bsky.social’s ‘It’s Not That Radical’ in the beauty of the North Yorkshire countryside. I feel energised to return to movement work like I haven’t in a long time.

✊ heartily recommended to everyone working for #climatejustice both new and old. We will win this.

😡 this means: no jury trials for robbery; for serious assaults, including SA; for fraud; for breaching protective orders. The kind of work I prosecute and defend on a daily basis.

✍️ The CBA are against this and so am I. Write to your MP and tell them this isn’t how you fix our broken system.

Rutger Bregman’s description of Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt President in American history” is both defensible and, critically, an expression of his legitimate opinion on a topic he was *invited* to discuss by the BBC. Cutting it reads as pure cowardice - so don’t let it go quietly.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

‘(Say, roughly, now, the truth). A man seeded me without consent. I bloomed.’

🤔 there are times when Paul Tran’s sense of drama, and clear love of punning, just hits my ear as thuddingly obvious. But for the energetic inventiveness of this collection I would say it is worth at least one read.

🖼️’These paintings are largely empty landscapes / where we can meet them, where we can exist…’

🎨 Knowing Mark Ward from his editorship of ‘Impossible Archetype’ it was a treat to take in these furtive, intimate, wry and melancholy poems in this lush pamphlet from @theemmapress.bsky.social

‘[o]ur work, they sing in chorus / is what will have had to happen’

🙏 I have taken a number of poetry books up on holiday with me that can do useful work in the quiet, and this debut from Victoria Adukwei Bulley does just that, even when it may not have been meant for me. For them, I give thanks.

😊 Tim isn’t here right now - he’s in Yorkshire drinking pints of Theakston’s Best and looking at the stars. But if you’d like to leave a message he’ll get back to you in… a week, say?

🤔 back to Heaney for a quick holiday up North.

✍️ I had always known ‘Seeing Things’ was a heavyweight collection, but now its explicitly Dantean tone and themes of afterlife and otherworldliness hit differently.

🙏 still poems to hold up and catch the light, and then circulate with new perspective.

🏳️‍⚧️ Every #TransDayOfRemembrance seems to come around with a greater sense of pain and urgency for how much has been lost - but a renewed resolve to keep going.

🕯️ mourn the dead, and fight like hell for the living.
Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we remember the transgender lives lost to violence.

The Green Party stands shoulder to shoulder with transgender people in the face of increasing transphobic rhetoric in our society and politics.

🤷‍♂️ anyone else doing holiday shopping for young relatives?

🎁 Looking for credibly age-appropriate presents I seem to find myself turning into Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head…

🥋 returning to where it all began for a one-day Shorinji Kempo seminar in Oxford. 9 years after first getting the t-shirt, and 16 years after starting my training, it feels GOOD to be one of those still keeping up the training.

🙏 many thanks to Sensei Chris, Steve, Jess and Oxford Dojo for hosting!

😌 okay, so…

☸️ not all its claims stick, but there is a real, deep authority in the words and method of Thich Nhat Hanh that rings through this classic text, written for his fellow monks and peace activists, down to the present day.

🙏 may all beings be free of suffering, and attain liberation.

🪡’Unpick me old, spin me a yarn worthy of queer…’

😮 extraordinary things happen across Rachel Mann’s poems, where trans self-realisation and spiritual transformation blend together, and words are stitched and re-stitched in dizzying display.

👏 another challenge to be sure, but worth it.
November 9, 2025 at 11:08 PM
😊 well ain’t that a fun bit of news to wake up to…
Huge congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on his election as Mayor of New York City from all of us at the Green Party! 🎉💚

🤔 strange to take a rest day that includes being haunted from two directions at once… but then I think it fits. As the Eve of All Hallows goes into All Saints Day, so Ella Hickson’s ‘Oedipus’ goes into Jay Bernard’s still-haunting ‘Surge’.

🙏 if there is such a thing as ‘the communion of saints’…
