Excited to share my new preprint. My work focuses on solitude, but I am not one to advocate for a "solitude theory"; psych has too many theories so one less would be good. So, what I did the past 2 yrs is talking to people, reading work outside of my literature, essentially to shop for a framework 🧵

I've been away from Bluesky for 1,5 years, so just to update whoever is unaware: I'm at UPF Barcelona now. If you're ever around, please come and say hi :-)

What is the latest on VR research in behavioral science? Do we know yet the way participants respond in VR environment would map onto their behavior if they are put in a similar “controlled” real-life environment? Any papers would be appreciated.

Thank you for the recommendation. I might just look up their papers for recreational readings. I have thoughts for research that I wish someone would work on but not necessarily will work on them myself 😅

In uni I got a scam phone call from US Border Control saying I owed money. I told the dude I have to shower bc I don’t leave the house without shower, and he actually waited 😂 Then I drove to Target with him on the phone to get gift cards but cashier wouldn’t let me. The whole thing was very stupid.

Is anyone going to #SAS2026 and would like to be part of a symposium on the measurement of emotions? I wanna present results from mixed methods study where we asked people to explain HOW they chose a certain number during each emotion assessment.

Make an effect size prediction!

@jamiecummins.bsky.social and I are replicating Balcetis & Dunning's (2010) "chocolate is more desirable than poop" (Cohen's d = 4.52)

Let us known in the replies what effect size you think we'll find. Details of the study in the thread below.

Gratitude is cool but I wonder if there are many research on apology in relationship. Lately I feel our (Western?) societies don’t model apology enough. On the other hand, for some East Asian cultures, like Japan usually as a model example, apology is almost second nature www.bbc.com/travel/artic...

In this behemoth effort led by @anhhtran.bsky.social, we reanalysed 11 experience-sampling datasets, and found limited evidence that context (intensity, controllability, and social features) meaningfully shaped everyday emotion regulation strategy use.

Marie Neurath is amazing, and her book on cognitive science for kids is wonderful: Machines which Seem to Think (1954). H/t @irisvanrooij.bsky.social youtu.be/XBWhdcD0r9I for this video about her. Book available for free online: www.fulltable.com/iso/mw.htm

Americans who think British people wear cardigans and turtlenecks all year don’t know those knitwear are 60% wool and 40% mildew.
No matter how dry I keep my sweaters, they sit in the closet and come out smelling damp 🥲

One of the best things I did in Amsterdam is to tell students that I’d make the taped lectures only available to them when the average turnout at lectures was 67%. Taught them a lesson on collective goods and coordination. It worked!

'It is no secret that student attendance has plummeted in recent years, with near-empty lecture halls a staple of the post-pandemic world.'

Really? I lecture to all our 1st years. Lecture hall is full, not near-empty. Student engagement picked up last year and (early days) seems stronger again. 1/2

The discussion 👇 is good. I wish people would spill more tea about how journals work behind the scenes, the operation, the biz to keep it goin’, how to keep submissions coming in and also balance with the demands etc. I don’t know what I am expecting but I want more cause I know nothing!

This is really nice.

But at the same time it is sad that a separate journal for replications is needed. Replications are not a different kind of thing but instead a foundational aspect of normal run of the mill science biz. We should not reinforce the idea that they should be treated differently.

Hi everyone, after 6 months, this film production is now ready! 🥳 The Common Films www.commonfilms.co team did an amazing job so I highly recommend them if you are thinking of doing something similar for your research.

The series has 5 parts. This is part 1, so follow the lab's page for more 👇

We believe that finding restorative #solitude is much more than just making the time for yourself; it's also about having people that support you to have that time.

This Family Recharge series aims at helping #parents reframe me-time. This is a collab with Common Films, led by UCL Dr Paul Craddock.

This caught my attention; the paper is proposing the circumflex model of affect for fish. As a non-native speaker, I also thought it's always "fish" and never "fishes" but anyway...

Perhaps my retirement project would look at the deactivation effect of solitude in fish.
