So much of your career chances are determined by whether you are working with a successful and supportive team.

I.e. Whether you are working with a line manager or mentor who hands down opportunities. Coauthorships on papers. Coapplicants on grant.

If you're not being given these, you MUST move.

Excited to share our work making an "allostasis-first" case that brain function is most productively framed in terms of its core regulatory function. We also introduce some new ideas in the context of metabolism and cognitive function in Alzheimer's.

Managing emotions is not easy - we often get by with a little help. In the NEW Social Interaction and Emotion Lab at Rutgers-Newark, we’ll study how social interactions regulate emotion using experiments, naturalistic data, and multi-modal approaches. ✨ Now recruiting! ✨🙌 Learn more: raziasahi.com

This was a really great read, Geoff. Im sorry to hear about the misguided critique, but I appreciate the way you verbalized how to manage it in a productive manner. An important lesson for all!

I received a critique of my work that I found unsatisfying, and in my latest substack post I use research on relationship conflict to try to figure out why. unromanticprof.substack.com/p/a-users-gu...

That's SO fascinating. I've also been tinkering with true zero scales (e.g., 0-100) and it seems like that kind of scale reallllly throws people off. Anyway, I hope you find a symposium for this because I would LOVE to see it (and you) at SAS!

I don't have data on this but I am DYING to know the results of your work. I've been recently obsessed with response scale measurement for ER strategies and I'm (mostly) convinced many studies are not accurately capturing what people are actually doing.

Is anyone going to #SAS2026 and would like to be part of a symposium on the measurement of emotions? I wanna present results from mixed methods study where we asked people to explain HOW they chose a certain number during each emotion assessment.

Pls share!

This paper might be of interest and likely more directly addresses your question: scholar.google.com/citations?vi...

I'm honestly not sure because there's other recent work showing that traits also don't really predict ER strategies (basically, not much seems to predict momentary ER). There's also robust work showing somethings work just fine in the lab (e.g., the intensity hypothesis).

In this behemoth effort led by @anhhtran.bsky.social, we reanalysed 11 experience-sampling datasets, and found limited evidence that context (intensity, controllability, and social features) meaningfully shaped everyday emotion regulation strategy use.

What annotations / metadata do you wish was included with every #cogsci dataset (especially #workingmemory folks 👀)? My current list includes the experiment task, stimulus, level of data (trial-, subject-, or group-level), format, and whether analysis code is provided. Any more?

New ad for an open rank position in Psychology at Cornell. That Human Bonding course seems very popular! May be a good fit for a relationship scientist out there. Below is a snippet of the job ad.

Excited to share my new preprint. My work focuses on solitude, but I am not one to advocate for a "solitude theory"; psych has too many theories so one less would be good. So, what I did the past 2 yrs is talking to people, reading work outside of my literature, essentially to shop for a framework 🧵
