Even when firearm injuries aren’t fatal, they have lasting effects: >25% of children 0–5 develop new mental health diagnoses after injury. Even witnessing gun violence harms development.

25% of 3-yr-olds can pull a 10-lb trigger; most handguns only need 5–8 lbs. Unintentional deaths often involve a parent’s gun (60%) or the gun of a sibling (59%). Nightstands, closets, & cars are common access areas.

Most child gun injuries happen at home. Handguns account for 90% of firearms deaths in 1–4 year-olds. Counseling on secure storage is vital when there are young children in the home.

Many people experiencing intimate partner violence buy guns to protect themselves—but a firearm in the home actually increases risk of homicide & suicide. Providers can help by counseling on secure storage, discussing alternative safety strategies, and supporting personalized safety planning. #DVAM

When firearms are stored unlocked, the risk of child suicide soars.
