Been away for two weeks so I’m back to a somewhat wild and crazy garden with a long list of jobs. But look, tulips! 🥰🖤 🌱 #GardensHour
A tale of two lilies! I was very lucky to find Black Ship (first picture) bulbs at Gardeners World Live this year so I was able to compare them with my existing Knight Rider flowers (second picture). The sort of gardening experiment I enjoy 😂🥰 #GardensHour 🌱

Why is there also a squirrel on my Yule tree? Because of Ratatoskr or “drill-tooth” the squirrel who gnaws at and runs around Yggdrasil. Passing rude messages between the eagle and the serpent who live above and below the tree, making them dislike each other #FolkloreSunday

Things that just make sense on my folklore and mythology centric Yule tree. Mushrooms, skulls and antlers. Wolves. Black Phillip. Snow boots for Skadi! 🥰👍🎄 #yule

Woke up to find that we’d had an earthquake here in Lancashire last night and now it looks like someone has destroyed the dark lord Sauron’s magic ring 😂🤷‍♀️

Autumn blooming violets and winter flowering primroses are two of the plants that folklore claims are omens of death or misfortune if they show up out of season, during the cold months of the year 🥶💀 #FolkyFriday 🌱
A very frozen looking #FlowersOnFriday this week! We’ve not had snow yet but it’s been very cold the last few days ❄️ 🌱

The witchiest winter plant (imo) that I saw called a “hell of a bore” this week! I don’t agree! Once said to have poisoned Alexander the Great they’re sacred to the sorceress Hecate and linked to necromancy. They also cured Hercules of madness after Hera made him kill his children #FolkloreSunday

Cool things I’ve done recently. Been to find some more Viking age cross shafts in my local area, in a graveyard 👍🥰

Poppy is linked to gods of sleep (and death) like the twins Hypnus and Thanatos. It was also a component of “dwale” if mixed with vinegar. A sleep inducing recipe from the 12th century. The Middle English word (pronounced dwahluh) comes from Old Norse “dwol” meaning sleep or trance #FolkyFriday 🌱

The wicker man (this is the Alton Towers version) is mentioned by both Caesar and Strabo as a method of Celtic human sacrifice. With the ashes scattered to help crops grow. Diodorus also said Celts would burn animals and captives with the first fruits of the harvest or in wooden boxes #FolkyFriday

November means bulb planting! Was out adding crocus and fritillaries to some community spaces over the weekend and I’ve ordered myself more “Midnight Sky” hyacinths for home today too because they’re just stunning 🌱 #GardensHour

Definitely most proud of the recycled/reused plants (also grown from my own seed) and donated pots I’ve slowly added to a local churchyard. As part of a plan to improve a quiet, unloved area there. Put in 5 unwanted yarrows last week from our local In Bloom summer bedding scheme too 🥰👍 #GardensHour

Alongside @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social, @nationaltrust.org.uk & @wclnews.bsky.social, we’ve responded to @georgemonbiot.bsky.social 's piece on the Planning Bill.

He’s right: it’s a grave threat to nature.

But we’ve never been silent.

We’ve challenged it at every turn & we won’t stop now.
