lastly, a common rebuttal to contaminant reporting is that there are unavoidable levels of lead in lots of foods. some context:

taking just one serving of one of the powders we tested would expose you to 45% more lead than the average american gets from everything they eat/drink in a day combined

i feel like this story is particularly important right now, because protein-maxxing is *so* in vogue. before working on this, i believed i was woefully protein deficient

it turns out that's just a myth that has been floating around for decades—the average american gets more than enough protein!!

nearly all the plant-based products we tested had elevated lead levels: vegan powders had 9x as much lead as dairy and 2x as much as beef

though dairy-based powders had the lowest levels, half were still too contaminated for safe daily use

Ok. I think I'm finished crying. Had an intense dream about someone I love who passed away almost 20 years ago. It was like they never died. Cried hard in the dream. Cried waking up.

Whew. Grief is something.

The shame is overwhelming, but I have to say it. I survived on the streets only by staying with a man who was my abuser and rapist. My current home is my shield. Anything helps to keep that shield up.

They know something real is making their lives hard.

It's easier to blame trans ppl, or immigrants, or Black ppl than to accept that whiteness is inherently violent and that capitalism is killing us all.

They want to think of themselves as good and pure and they can't if they accept the truth.

Finally finished listening to this last night. The writing and storytelling was incredible, and it was a great story. But this book was really hard for me to finish. It touched a lot of sore spots for me. I had to pause frequently to tend to what was coming up for me. Will reflecting indefinitely
