Without Itagaki, the fighting scene wouldn't have reached the heights it has over the years. The 3D action genre wouldn't have evolved to the point we know today, and the groundwork of the eventual Souls genre would've taken significantly longer to sell. He was far more influential than people think

Itagaki was a fascinating and complicated person. He played this "larger than life" public character and gamed the system using controversy to boost his and his self-imposed rival's sales. His love for overcoming difficult challenges created one of the biggest shifts in gaming in decades.

I'll still play the sequel at some point. I just hope now that they've gotten most of the whole Chiral Network and American history stuff out of their system, the writing finally gets some polish.

I'm meant to judge the game as a whole and not just from the great gameplay, so #DeathStranding gets a 6/10.

It's not a bad game. It sure as hell isn't as good as some people were claiming back when it came out and not GotY material.

But I also understand why it connected with people back then.

In addition, because of the current political climate, hearing all this "FOR AMERICA" bullshit felt more like a slap to the face. I could not give any less of a shit for the Chiral Network. I have 0 attachment to the message of connecting America and Making A-...wait, that makes it infinitely worse.

I kind of wish that I had played this game back when it came out, in the middle of the pandemic. Maybe then its message of connecting people in a world that had completely given up would've resonated better with me.

So many people shat on Konami for what they did to Kojima, but this here is proof of what happens when the man goes unchecked. Over-ambition pushed this game so close to greatness, yet also killed any chance it had of crossing that line.

However, the rest are just there to treat you like an idiot for "not getting it". To make matters worse, this obsession with making every single character cry every 3 seconds just robs any emotional impact to genuinely well crafted scenes. You stop caring the more you see it.

Being obtuse for the sake of being obtuse is not good storytelling, it's just padding.

The core cast of Sam, Fragile, Amelie, Lou, Clifford, Higgs and, to a certain extent, Die-Hardman are all fantastic and their story is told very well.

Unfortunately, with Death Stranding, the vast majority of the extended cast serves this exact same purpose. Which is doubly infuriating when the core story is mindnumbingly simple, just buried among tons upon tons of convoluted mumbo jumbo to try and cover its simplicity.
